One additional comment on this quest–this will be the opener for Dark Valkyre, where your fond memories of being a newbie turn into a terrible nightmare. Some ground rules for the quest:

(1) Do not go into Dark Star City until the very end.

(2) It will be in your best interest to use the Ancient Sceptre of Dominion to make the following zones Legendary before killing a single mob in them:

Dark Mandelbrot’s Mansion
Dark Farmstead
Dark Daar Tempest
Dark Tiger Glen
Dark Mystical Fens
Dark Medieval Circus
Dark Autumnal Forest
Dark Smurf Village

(3) Each prime class in the game will be receiving a new forge from Dark Valk, so you probably don’t want to hand out items collected from mobs until the end of the quest, as they will be the components for the forges.

(4) Dark Valk is officially on the Valkyre continent, so you cannot simply gate there. Once there, if you recall, you will find yourself at Newbatia’s South Gate. This is the South Gate of the real Newbatia. For anyone > level 20 prime, the only spells you are permitted to cast are singing ‘rina cruinne’ or ‘raise dead’. Besides that, you will likely get thrown into Dark Newbatia. Once on Dark Valk, you should be able to move your group around with convocation, but you won’t be able to gate within the continent of Valkyre for the same reason higher level players can’t gate to Valkyre today.

Greetings

Tomorrow, we’ll be opening a new area on the continent of Valkyre. There will be a little bit of

drachma, some discovery, maybe some new items indicative of the area, and some fun. We

will likely carry the fun off of Valkyre for a little while after the new area is discovered and

experienced as well including some drachma and epics. This is not meant to be a big quest,

we just wanted to open the new area with something more than a simple “Here you go!”.

So bring your valkers if you have some to join the portion on Valkyre, and then join as

you may afterwards.

We will experience a short reboot in the morning, and within an hour after that reboot,

we will fire it up. Reboot time will be normal time for those of us who have been around

enough to know when the automated reboot hits usually on Sundays (9:30 am server time).

New Players Write-Up

Greetings

Today, I am announcing that for the next week, I am inviting interested players to give us your best

write-up for new players of how to play and approach the game of sloth. You may collaborate on this

document or you may go it alone. Should you decide to collaborate, know that any one person can

only receive one reward and get credit for only one document that he or she participated in making.

This means that if you helped with three documents in collaborative efforts, then only one will count

towards your reward should it be selected.

This event will last until Sunday February 2nd. The top three documents will be selected for rewards of

50 drachma for single contestants, and a total of 100 drachma for collaborations to be divided among

the collaborators. Rewards cannot be split up otherwise among multiple characters. Characters to be

rewarded must be chosen at time of submission. Only one submission per team or player. Final selected

documents will be added to the wiki page shortly after the conclusion of the event as time allows.

The top three documents will be selected for reward. There will be no other rewards.

Rules & Notes:

The document must be submitted in a text format only.
No more than four collaborators per document. Please include the contributors’ main characters’ names

in the document.
The document must be well-organized and easy to read, and in English.
Please proofread your document. Final submission will be edited and checked for publication quality.
Submissions must be sent as a private message to Neptune via the forum messaging system. No email

submissions or in-game submissions will be accepted.
Documents must be submitted by players with a login stamp of not more than a month old.
Try to include suggestions, tips, and tricks.
Documents with criticisms of the game or players will automatically disqualified because that will

be considered to be off-topic and/or out of context. Try to keep your language clean and free of

out-of-game slang and profanity. (This is a family mud, for the most part.)
Try not to discourage or disparage the reader from choosing one path or another through the game.

Immortal and administrative staff, or related persons or characters are ineligible for rewards. We

want this to come from you, the players! We also want to minimize the advantages of one player

over another.

Be objective. Try to limit your personal bias when creating your newbie guide. I’m sure we can all

 paint an excellent picture of how one class is better than another, but let's try to curb our

 enthusiasms in that direction.

This event is open to all players who meet the guidelines and requirements.

Any questions you may have can be directed to me directly in the game or via the forum’s messaging system.

This event is offered without warranty or guarantee of any kind whatsoever, and does not constitute an

agreement or acceptance for providing reward except under the rules and guidelines noted above within

the context of this document contained herein.

I’m not against imm quests, I’m thankful for them, I’m not against epics with tokens… But surely there are better ideas to earn the reward than what tends to be a couple of players at the keyboard leading a whiny horde of “what about me!” self entitled bastages. The idea encourages no contribution or much collaboration. We may as well line up and let an imm set drachma = drachma + x on all the players. It’s as cancerous as players afking in group with choppers at Xerxes. We practically don’t even need to scroll for epics these days. Don’t get me wrong, I’ll take the drachma anyway I can… but this doesn’t encourage the type of players the game needs to survive. It’s a game I’m kind of fond of, even though on a daily basis it frustrates me with it’s silliness. Are we really at a point of giving players drachma for practically nothing - to try and keep them playing? There will always be the can’s and the cant’s the haves and the have not’s but at least make us work for it. Communal cp gathering or trivia quests have worked well in the past. At least put the token’s on unknown mobs and give us some clues to find the zones or something slightly more thrilling. Otherwise we may as well just line up at the innkeeper where you can give the leader 15-20 tokens, to save yourself the trouble of distributing them to a bunch of tired old, predictable, low xp giving epics. The only thing unpredictable about our certain success is how many token’s there will be… and that makes it all quite boring to be frank. Appreciate the drachma though…

PS, if the imms haven’t noticed, groups larger than 12 killing almost anything get less xp than smaller groups running non epics.

PSS, I bet pale night is still broken.

IDEA:

How about something like… a trivia quiz (how many unique mobs in Grymlyns? whats the room name east of iblis, how many coins has …? whats the meaning of life? etc etc) where each correct answer (leader submits one answer agreed on by the group) gives us a RANDOM letter in a room name, which is somewhere in the game. Once the room name is unscrambled using the letters we won from the trivia, we can retrieve the grenade there, the group gets locked and the party starts. At least everyone can contribute in the trivia and unscrambling of the room name to find the grenade. We all know any regular epic is going to die, that’s the certain part. At least the puzzle part might be fun.

Area Opener

Greetings!

After a nearly a year of design and construction, I am pleased to announce we will be holding an

opener quest this Sunday around Noon Central US Time. There will be some new EQ and Mobs along

with some special rewards for participants. In addition, there will be a secondary quest that will last

until Saturday at 12:00 a.m. Central US Time that will be open for players to take advantage of during

the week.

The new area is a great undertaking, and I’d like to take this time to thank the immortal staff in

helping out with the construction and review of a total of eleven new zones and over 550 rooms

as well as several new epics and several new forges to undertake to expand our player options.

Also, I’d like to take time to make special praise for the time and effort that Teker has spent

bringing the visions of this new venture to life by way of his skills and help. Be sure to give him

thanks when you see him next. The new zones are sure to bring some much needed and desired

content and challenges to the game as well as opening the doors for additional content down the line.

So, bring your thinking caps and anticipate a bit of challenge. All are welcomed to join. We will

will meet when the quest begins at West Gate in Bal Harbor. At the conclusion of the regular

quest, we will reveal and/or discuss the secondary quest that will last for the entire week if

you don’t discover it during the quest.

Thanks for playing, and we hope to see you guys at the quest! And remember: Not all challenges

shall require the use of a sword or spell :)

The Aisholm Explorer’s Guild is proud to announce that after several months,

the first set of verses from a newly discovered set of lost pages referred to

as “The Songs of Hidden Snow” have finally been translated. It is with great

anticipation that they present this translation from the ancient vernacular

for your perusal. Thanks for your continued support, and we hope to see

more of you in the near future aiding with our ongoing endeavors to discover

more of our continent’s lost treasures. The verses are translated as such:

We will be holding an opener quest on Sunday June 11th between 12:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m.

For those able to attend, please be prepared to spend a few hours from beginning to start.

This quest will be for everyone who is willing and able to join, and we only have one request

and/or requirement at this time: You’ll need a Bard Prime or two. There will be drachma and

a horde of new items to discover as well as one our favorite things: a new area.

We will meet in Judge’s Temple on Aisholm when it is time to start.

New Years Day Games

Depending on numbers and level of interest, I may run some games on New Year’s Day. The format would be something along the lines of groups of 3-4 people competing in a scavenger hunt. The hunt would either be for mobs or objects. If mobs, each team would have their own designated room to deliver the mobiles to. If objects, then each team receives a special container to put items in.

Category could be absolutely anything, for example, “mammals”, “mobs under level 20”, “objs with wood in name”…anything…

The main rule would be, You can’t touch a mob if a player from another team is already present in room and you can’t harass other players in any way. ‘Touch’ to be interpreted in the widest possible meaning, i.e. no cast, no fight, no steal from, no push, no talk to, no nothing. If another team already in room, move on.

Prizes tbd. Time tbd, leaning toward 11AM Server Time, but will depend on numbers and interest.

Christmas 2016 Quest

Conditional Love of a Clown - Holiday Quest

Holiday Greetings!

I’ll be thanking our players again this year with another Conditional Love of a Clown Quest.

This year the quest will be as follows. Every day from Dec 26th to Jan 1, I will post a mob, zone, and passphrase to the crier, as a reply to this post. Your job is to find the mob, speak the passphrase, and receive a quest token. If (AND ONLY IF) you collect all 6 personalized quest tokens, you will win your choice of: a metamorphic gemstone (transforms into random gem), 25 drachma, a restring (not a restring token to sell…), or a desocketing of 1 rune.

Terms and Conditions:

As a thank you to our long term players, this quest is only available to players who are at least 3x40 as of Jan 1st. This quest is limited to 1 prize per human player. Anyone participating is subject to an IP address log check as well as a check of known alts. Anyone caught attempting to receive more than 1, will receive no prize and will be fined 25 drachma. Prize is non-transferrable and must be collected no later than January 8th. Prize must be collected from Juggleblood without exception. Quest details may NOT be discussed on open channels (gossip, auction, newbie, shout, or quest).

4th of July Stuff 2016

Ok this is going to be less involved than same time last year.

No 1-drach token scatter this time.

And since you all got a dose of impromptu quest earlier in the week, no general loading of the normal epic rack with Tokens again above and beyond the holiday theme epics.

But there will be two things:

the do it yourself solo quest will be roughly like last year. Almost exactly, in fact.

Kill redcoats or subdue them and turn them in at George Washington at any Inn.

You get more for a subdue than you do for a kill.

I will release them in waves throughout the weekend, the footsoldiers first, then sergeants and captains, then colonels last.

Second and last, the five custom July 4th epics (George III, Lord North, etc) will make a reappearance.

Probably mid-morning my time on the 4th (something like 10:00 server but this is not exact)

They will at least have crystal drachma tokens on them.

N.B.: any and all of this could be cancelled depending what Splork and Breeze say, I haven’t heard from them directly about the holiday quest stuff at all. But I will assume no news is good news in absence of an email from them, and go forward.

Area Opener: The Forest of Grimm

We’ll be opening an new area this weekend designed for low level characters

of no more than about level 30 or below. There will be some new equipment to

discover as well as some drachma to find. It’s not a huge area so it shouldn’t

very long for those who wish to participate. We ask at this time that you bring

out your lower level characters so that everyone has an equal chance to discover

the things to be found. Try to keep things around 30th level prime or

below - total levels are not an issue, however.

We’ll meet in Aisholm on the continent of Thule between noon and 1 p.m. Central

time US time.

The quest had been initiated by Rusalka, who told us that her insane sisters summoned Tarrasque in the world. Moreover the demon mother had helped it. So we had a situation when both Tarrasque and the demon mother were sitting in one room. Both were aggro. So we decided to target weakier enemy(the demon mother) first. We succedeed in killing it. Hello Denizens of Sloth,

Sorry for the late announcement but preparations for this years

Christmas Quest have been

a little more challenging than normal. Throughout the world of Jord,

all the Christmas Stockings have vanished. To restore them to their

rightful places, we must recover them from Satan Claws’ demonic army

of elves.

The quest will be held at 7pm Server Time on Christmas Day itself, the 25th.

Type “time start” within the game to see the server time.

We will have two teams (and we need to start picking Captains for

those teams right away,

post in the thread on the Forums if you want to be a Team Captain and

I will set up a poll at

about noon on the 24th server time, and then voting will close on the

poll early on Christmas

day).

The captains will then get alternating selection going down the who

list in order of size, as

to who they want on their team.

For the winning team that reclaims the most stockings from the Elf

army, a modest amount

of drachma will be awarded (we went light on the size of the reward

partly because of how

late this is being announced).

For the losing team, half of that reward will be given out.

Greeting, mortals. It is I, Breeze - Lord of the Winds and Keeper of the

sacred voice. I am the thunder in the sky and flash of doom between

heaven and Jord. Hear me, and despair not in the tales I have to tell

but delight in the task and glory that is at hand.

Our world, Jord, is one of many. Evil exists in far more worlds than

good, and its foul ranks never tire nor do they resist agitation. As

such, our world has been breeched by the forces of evil once again,

when the conjunction is nigh and forthcoming. Even now, armies of

the dead gather for their assault upon our world. I have prepared

for this front that shall surely come, and have appealed to mine

brothers and sisters by ressurrecting the hero and vampire hunter,

Van Helsing, and his infinite wisdom and experience to help us combat

this menace. Imbued with the powers to reward all who assist with

pushing back the umbral forces, Van Helsing asks all who would be

heroes to fight along his side in battle against the hordes of undead

and evil. Van Helsing and I beseech all that would bathe in glory and

righteousness to gather 10 a.m. Pacific Time US October 31st to stage

our march against evil.

The minions of evil are sure to be lead by even more powerful beings.

No mere mortal power could have opened such a bridge between the worlds

as these without the aid of some thing. My spies tell us these powers

will be employing an item to assist them with keeping the rift between

world open. We believe this item to be none other than an ancient, lost

Staff of Angry Tempests. This staff must be retrieved, and used against

them. But to ensure our victory, Van Helsing asks that the corpses of all

otherworldly vampires be brought to him for proper disposal, else they

shall surely rise again and our efforts will have been all for naught.

Now, fly my people! Gather your forces, for the hour is close at hand. Let

us, together as one, beat back the dogs of war and send them back to the

foul corners of the planes from whence they came!

 3. Regular epics will be loaded with Drachma tokens.

 4. Custom Halloween epics will yield Drachma as well.

 5. Gain honor by clearing out the "ghostly green" Haloween themed mobs.

 6. Each of the aforementioned things will persist until they are

 all killed off / collected or we experience a reboot or crash.

If anybody missed it, there are three things going on:

a do it yourself solo quest was started at the same time.

Kill redcoats or subdue them and turn them in at George Washington at any Inn.

You get more for a subdue than you do for a kill.

Lastly, 5 custom epics have been created and released.

They have crystal drachma tokens on them.

Christmas Quests 2014

Happy Holidays!

I’m going to hold two quest times this year to maximize opportunity to participate.

The first will be Christmas Day Dec 25th, server time, 12PM-2PM.

The second will follow at 12AM-2AM, server time (Dec 26th).

So as to eliminate any possible confusion, I will not discuss time zones. I encourage you to log into the mud, and type time-started. This will leave no possible doubt for you as to what server time is. To reiterate, the posted time is SERVER TIME, the time you see when you type TIME STARTED into the command line.

There shall be drachma, honor and unspecified gems to be had. And yes, you may do both if you are able.

This evening, Halloween settings have been turned on mud-wide.

In addition, 103 Halloween treats have been scattered across the

mud to all continents at random. Some will yield positive results.

Others? Not so positive. You have our goodly creator, Splork, to

thank for this one. I’m just the messenger. Everyone be sure to

give him a ’thank you’ when you see him next.

A similar message will be posted to the events list as well. I expect

this event to last until all the tokens are found or we reach November

1st. Whichever comes first. Don’t prepare for the worst, and don’t

prepare for the best scenarios. But, when in doubt, prepare for

the strangest scenario.

Area Opener: The Amaryllian Pass

With the opening of a new area on the Island, we will be holding a little special quest/rewards

opener for the occasion. There will be some stipulations however:

No single character may be over any class level of 20.
It’s not necessary to group, but it may prove useful in some situations.
The area being opened tomorrow is designed for levels 20 and below.
The continent to be explored will be Dino Island.

The Athenaeum Opener

The Christmas 2013 quest was combined with the opener for The Athenaeum.

I’m unable to provide very many specifics, but great fun was had by all, as far as I’m aware.

Crumbs was the first player to find the new area and was awarded an extra Mirage Quest Token.

Those of you that received a Mirage QUEST Token, hold onto them. You’ll be given a chance to redeem your token(s) for a variety of prizes. As is logical, the best prizes cost more. But every token is worth more than you think it is right now. Unfortunately, you’ll have to hold onto those tokens until such time when I announce the redemption program.

Thanks to all the adventurers that participated in the Christmas and area opener quests. Hope you enjoyed both. Feedback is always appreciated and read.

New Forge and Autoquest

A meeting of the Zodiac Mage Society (ZMS) was called to order by Master Mage Mennalen. At this meeting they discussed many issues on their agenda, one particular item stood out among the rest. Talk of a new Max_stat Leg Item. The decided to use a royal forge to create this item, after several days of deliberation they decided upon the items that would be required for such a forge and passed them along to the king who will perform create this new item at his personal forge.

A young woman never before seen at these meetings had a few things to say about this new item and requested that she could have some part in this as well. She traveled from a close continent as soon as she heard about the meeting wanting to offer her services. She spends her days and nights roaming open plains staring at the sky and keeping notes of what she see’s in the stars.

Greetings, mortals.

I received today a disturbing letter from my friend, the cograph mapmaker :

I am upset. Quite upset. I like maps. Those small pieces of paper hold the wisdom of the people that explored the land before us. And it seems that no-one care about them anymore.

I visited the other day my friend Curtis the cartographer, the assistant of the mighty Benq. I admit that i hadn’t visited him in a couple years, but he looked like fifty years older. He said that no-one bring him new material anymore. Granted, everyone go there and check his maps, but no-one bring him new maps.

Not that long ago we had every single place of this world mapped and cataloged. But world evolve. Some places have changed, other have been recently discovered. And no-one took the effort of mapping them.

I would fix it myself, but im stuck in that Maw place, and I wont leave it until im done with it.

I beg for your help. Make the adventurers help us in this task. Tempt them, treat them, force them, I don’t care. But if we don’t fix this soon, the art of mapping will be lost for good, and new generations wont have any clue about where they are, or about where to go.

Help me, old friend. You are my only hope.

I like maps myself. But above it, I like to help my friends. And I wont fail the mapmaker after all we have lived together, I remember how excited he was when he first found those snakes in the Maw.

Every Sunday, I will choose an area that needs help with map. Areas will be all range, some will require a powerful adventurer to explore, others will be part of the lands of Valkyre. You guys will have seven of your mortal days (that is, until next Saturday) to send me a map of that area. To send the maps, use that spell that you guys call email with the target isabo@slothmud.org.

Things that I will use to determine how good or bad a map is :

How complete it is. You guys can know if you completely have an area with the score.

How exact it is. A wrong exit here and there? Bad bad.

How helpful it is. Rooms that require water breath, fly, fire rooms, surrounding areas, things that should be know … all counts.

How beauty it is. Any useless uncalled stuff will actually count negatively. Its not the same making a map beautiful (check Mercurial Woods map) than trying to be annoying (check L.A.A.A.A.M. map).

Things that every single map should have :

Area Background should be transparent unless the background is a nice picture (like Mercurial Woods)
File Format should be PNG

Continent name.

Run from the standard recall point to the entrance of the area.

Any other useful run related to the area. For instance, the Castle of the Family DeGrance should contain the run to Acarni.

Name of the immortal that made the area.

(optional) Your own name.

I will check the received maps, discuss with other immortals, choose the one that we like more and send it to Curtis during the next week. The author of the map we choose will receive a reward, usually in those shiny pieces that you mortals call “drachma”. Reward will vary, depending on how complex the area to map is and on how good the map is. I reserve the right to not reward anyone or reward several people, always depending on quality.

Mortal incarnation of divinities won’t be able to take part in this adventure. :twisted:

EPIC SYSTEM UPDATES

EPIC SYSTEM (a few notes from me)

As I mentioned before I will be introducing to you a couple of new concepts - Events and Honorquests. I’ll take a moment to go over these here so you know what to look for.

EVENTS—

As aforementioned, Events will be mini quests generated by the mud. As of now (with everyone low ranked) these events are voluntary, with no penalties for not participating. As you gain in rank however, and complete objectives along the way, some events will come to you, whether you want them to or not. Mobs will seek revenge, you will be asked to do things for mobs, etc. As per some discussions about afkedness, you will be safe from these events if you are afk in a SAFEROOM or in a VAULT. Out in the open you are fair game.

HONORQUESTS—

In its simplest form this are autoquests. BUT, some will be far more complex and complicated than regular autoquests. Anyone who has EVER done one of my autoquests knows that I sometimes go off on tangents from the main quest and have little subquests to prevent bottlenecks and boredom. These will be no different. My advice to ALL of you who don’t do it already:

1: Keep a log of who said what and what they said to do.

2: Dont assume 1 step and its over, or even 3 steps and its over -READ the questers comments.

3: Think in a logical progression if all else fails. I’m a logical person, and sometimes I will leave things out (accidentally, or on purpose) believing that logical progression will carry you forward. This applies to notetaking. If mob X tells you to go do something then come back, and 10 steps later you finally get a chance to do it, then logically, you would go back to mob X and see what happens (w/o someone needing to tell you “oh, now you can go back to X and tell him you did it).

4: Honorquests will be hidden in many things, to be found in a variety of ways. Not all will be go ask X about this-that. But everything can be found in something that is ingame and ready to go (not on Google).

This system is as much for me as it is for you. As a builder, I LOVE testing you with tricks, traps, and puzzles. I will be building things in this system to do just that. The mobs wont all be HIT HARD with LOTS OF HP. I know that gets boring. These mobs will require strategy, thinking, in some cases planning, and in some cases even a bit of luck. But most of all they will probably require that you actually be in control of your character. Some are designed to be a terror to botters.

Lastly, I have an open-door policy on everything dealing with this system. For those of you who have said, “this would be cool”, well, let me know it. I have lots of ideas and lots of reference material, but even I hit dry spells where ideas just wont flow. So if you have ideas for original mobs, or autoquests relating to something you read or did in the storyline, feel free to email me at Akasha(at)slothmud(dot)org. SUBJECT: EPIC

I keep a record of all ideas ppl tell me, and even tho you might not see it the next day or even the next week, rest assured its mulling over in my head till I can figure a way to make it work.

I have tested everything in this system as thoroughly as I can with keeping as much as possible secret. But I’m sure there will be bugs I missed. If you find something broken, or not working as it should the best thing to do is get me online, or email me and let me know so I can fix it. If there is a bug, it will probably work more against you than for you (its just the way I script things).

My plan for this system is to make bi-weekly to monthly additions in the form of expansion packs. The system that will be installed on Sunday is the Starter Package. A sampling of concepts and ideas I’ve been playing with. This package may or may not take you long to complete, but its mostly for me to see interest and desire. I will post in this thread everytime there is an expansion pack to be added and a summary of what it is (aka: new quests, new mobs, new events, bug fixes, etc).

Now really lastly, but deffinately not least. Special thanks to Kjartan and Isabo for their coding insights and abilities. Destiny for his work on a couple of areas. Krom for his insights on specific issues (not relevant to mortals ) And the entire staff of Creators for giving me the leeway to do this in the first place.
