Where Are They Now? (Older Players of Sloth II)

·3275 words·16 mins

Got a little nostalgic today so I stumbled across this Sloth site.

To begin with, I used to play Sloth II religiously from about 1993-1995, when I was in college at FIU.

My primary characters were DesertFox and Vain. My girlfriend at the time had a couple of characters named Baby and Sexy (who was a notorious p-thief at the time).

My best friend played Arakis who immorted and helped develop an area at one point.

I became friends with Moxy (another immortal) and Rollins and ultimately went on a few spring breaks with them up in Myrtle Beach, SC for a few years.

I guess I am posting just out of curiousity to see if any of the ‘older’ players are still around. (Oh, and hello JAKE! Good to see you still run this thing, even after 15 or so years).

Some names that come to mind: Wulfgar, Anger, FatherMace, Sadda, Giengen, Tamara, HectorDark….

If any older players are still around, please reply!

  • Vain - Lord Vain of the {Den of Thieves}

I started playing around 1995 or so, my friend Brian (Piglet) introduced me to the game. My first character was “Shabazz”

When Sloth III came around, I created Pisces. Played her off and on for a few years. At one point pisces was 107 years old!! Thats when i gave up for a while, plus i did a lot of moving and travelling. I played with people such as Regis and Canby (I always got a kick out of that), but Gelding (Jason) was my bestest, favoritest, fellow slother. He’s damn hot too! …sigh…

Anyway, a few months ago when the only thing to do in Maine in the winter is drink, I thought I’d log on just to see what’s happening….lo and behold…Pisces was only 23 years old!!! And there are 4 more classes!!! I was officially “into it” again.

Temple of the Masked God

A flicker of steel glitters from the east, as a smalll black stiletto can be seen hanging on a nearby wall. A small sharpening stone rests on a shelf, directly adjacent to the blade. To the west, a strange shadow can be seen lurking in and out of view, as the only apparent exit is towards that same direction.

Exits: West

Vain, the master shadow assassin, stands defiantly in the center of the room.

I actually created an area called DoT(Den of Thieves) which is loosely based on your sloth II clan. Many of the old clan names are included within it.

I played Hercules and Pegasus back then…

Well shit. Canby, I hand’t thought of him in a long time. I knew I recognized the name Pisces the other day, and asked Medios if it was she from s2 he said didn’t know. Anyway, I was in DoT with Jay (Jedha) and George (Flight/Scorn) and Mike Fry (Apolicus) and a couple other folks. I remember

being incredibly stoked that we actually had our own hall, this was pre-housing, so it was a big deal wo have the black key :) I guess I would have been playin’ Cubby or Nothing at the time. Cheers Dfox!

Strider and Dawnfire and Fmace and Isiel and Balrog still play as far as

I know, although not usually on those names.

Did old catacombs with both of them.

Awesome response guys. I remember all of ya - amazing to still see familiar faces after 12 or so years. Canby was a trip, and I remember Shabazz was a lot of fun too. Heck I even turned up old Clan mates!

And thanks for reminding me of some of the other names….

The DoT (Den of Thieves) was a lot of fun ….did I read you correctly in saying that there is an area in Sloth III with a statue of Vain? Man that is so awesome and I’m so glad I posted.

Also, Flight/Scorn is also the Arakis character I mentioned, I forgot that Arakis never really got played and only now remember that his primes were actually Flight/Scorn. In case anyone is curious, he and I are still best friends here in Miami. He is actually engaged and getting married in August in Jamaica, and then moving up to Tampa with his new wife. I talked to him last night about posting on here so maybe he’ll pop in and say hi.

He singlehandedly blames Sloth for nearly ruining his college career and costing him an accounting degree. I bet the same was true for many of us - I was hooked big time.

As for my ex girlfriend who played Baby/Sexy, she and I broke up sometime in the later days of my Sloth time. I lost track of her for many years but she recently found me. She is married and living in GA with 2 kids. I may tell her to drop by and post just for the hell of it.

These days I play a little bit of MMORPG (was playing City of Heroes for a while but got burned out), and also a lot of poker (online and in real life). But I really have to log back into Sloth and just see what it’s like these days. I’m sure I’ll be totally lost.

As much fun as I had playing prime chars, the p-thieving was a blast too. I really think that ‘Sexy’ may have been a more ’legendary’ character than Vain or DesertFox. My GF and I took turns playing her.

I suppose I should ask cough cough if anyone else still pthieves, and if so, have they risen to the level of the infamous Sexy? I know Jake always got a kick out of her antics and she had quite a few friends who assisted with her nefarious activities evil grin

Any more oldies willing to come out and say hi? :)

  • Lord Vain of the {Den of Thieves}

Pthieving is wrong and should be left for the professionals

Not that you would remember me, but I played lora on sloth II from like 92-95. I also played mrs and di and midnite a little but mostly I played lora a cleric. I used to hang out with tigger a lot who dated my then roomate in college for a while adrienne is who she played. But if you read this and remember me for any reason I am now playing shyla on sloth III

HUGS

I’ve been Turbo since 1992 :-)

Immorted a thief/mage named Endor. Started my addiction about August of 1994. Also played Christiana for while at the end of sloth 2.

Miss the U-Marylanders Truffle(John), Pisa, and Dragon(Brandon) and from my own school Peabody, Adjutor(Mike) who started me on sloth.

Broc/Mosaix

I know Auto has been missing in action and now I know why.. what you see will see if not for the faint of heart.

Thanks for the continued responses.

Blastard - I was at the gym with Scorn/Flight (George) last night and mentioned that someone on here had met him in person. He said he thought he knew who you were so I encouraged him to come on here and post. My real life name is Sean and odds are if you met George you probably met me too.

Someone mentioned DREW - how is she doing? I don’t want to mention anything too personal but I used to ride the Shuttle bus with her from FIU South to FIU North and as I recall she was a little sick back then. I lost track of her and am amazed she is still playing. Is she ok these days?

Lora/Midnite, I remember very well. You were always fun to play with and in fact if memory serves you were in {DoT} with Midnite? I remember also that you were so nice that once or twice I tried to pthieve you and felt terrible about it!

Endor I remember also, and of course who could forget Turbo.

Does Jake log on very often? Once in a while he’d zap me into some prison he built and leave me there for a while when the pthieving was going a little too far, lol.

Curious if any of you who have replied to this thread play other games these days? I kind of graduated from Sloth and NeTrek into games like Quake 3 for a while until coming back to RPG stuff with City of Heroes.

what ever happend to Zera?

Think someone mentioned online poker ..

what sites does everyone like?

i’ve tried party poker and bodog

but i like absolute poker the best at the moment

Shadis

I play the free MMORPG Shadowbane. It’s point and click

and the interface takes a week to get used to. But it’s a pretty

fun little game to kill time on. I don’t know any other Slothers that

play it, but there are a shit ton of old Antis that Medios and Dio and I

used to run around with on AC I.

Sweet jumpin grasshoppers! Shyla I didn’t know you were Midnite, wow, all makes sense now! Holy crap I learned the bounce command from Tigger (how could I have forgotten that?)! For the wreckchord I played Dromin and Finndo on Sloth II, heh, I suck at this game now but I was truly horrible back then! Good to know us geezers are still suckin’ down air!

Tigger was Kevinant’s girlfriend for a bit, then just him I think, right?

Kevinant being the Kevin-player of Covenant, as opposed to Davenant.

I tell ya who I don’t miss, and it’s Proteus/Hectordick. He was a real

tool.

just fyi i was midniTE not midniGHT which confused a lot of people so I probably wasn’t your DoT person but I was lora the one and only.

And I always wondered who it was that stole from me I never did know. SNICKER

Deb

p.s. tigger for a while was played by Kevin who came up and lived with my roomate for a While in Ohio but that is another story

what ever happend to Zera?

[/quote:7ijdo0ew]

Zera just disappeared. We never did find out what happened to him. At one time I knew his name, his state (Wisconsin), and the company he worked at (which was a big company with many offices), but I was never able to track him down and figure out where he went. Once he disappeared, he never returned.

I spoke to Zera just about a week or two before it was apparent he was ‘awol’…..the last conversation we had was in nov/dec of that year, and he told me (no, this is NOT a joke)…that he was goin deer huntin….I’ve been hoping since then that he didn’t have any ‘accidents’ out there or some such thing…

Shazuko Roku Ryuu

<Chaos>

depends… did he say whom he was hunting with? Dick Cheney perhaps?

I know I’d talked with him a week or two before he disappeared, and he didn’t give any indication of leaving sloth. I’ve always been concerned about what happened to him, but never had any way of finding out.

Hmm not to be alarmist (muahahhahahahhahahahaha) but that got me thinking, there was a horrible multiple murder during dear hunting season, you may have heard about it!

http://www.courttv.com/trials/vang/091205_ctv.html

I certainly hope they are not connected events!

He wasn’t one of them. If I remember right, his name was Brian Warner. It was something like that at least.

Jaso Warner?

PS> Hope you’re out there somewhere!

or Jason :-)

I played since 92, got wiped several times when it was just sloth at utexas when they did the player wipes (several times). I played or had an immort as Krom or Balrog most of the way through. I had quit for about 5 years until maybe 5-6 months ago when i came back, Krom doesnt do much besides some basic admin, but I do play a good amount.

I met the FIU group, even went out with you guys to some rave-like club where I nearly picked up some chick dancing, damn cant remember the place but it was in ft.lauderdale I think. george had the older gf, i remember we went to eat somewhere…lol.

I met and hung out with blastard (black & tans baby!), met alana, argent, blush, and hung out with ripple when we going to school at UF.

Of course there was our old cornell group grom Sloth I, mac/life/dream (back when multiplaying was the way to go), bree (now jardin and bree plays every so often), lorak (now karna and elwyn and others)

I met and also kinda went out with sipha (jen) for a while.

I also met turbo (al), we hung out some while I was in PA

Many of the others I am sure I am forgetting, and many more who I feel like i know because we spent so much time together.

Krom/Balrog (Erik)

[quote:gp0f2eak]I met and also kinda went out with sipha (jen) for a while.

To quote the Humpty Dance:

I once got busy in a burger-king bathroom!

I played this MUD far too much when I was a student at UT (University of Texas). I think when I started you could only log into it if you were at one of the crappy terminals that plugged into the VAX or SUN machines at UT in 1991 or 1992. It wasn’t exactly public for awhile.

My main character was feyd, but I think I had to remake him once or twice. I wish I could remember my alts names, but that was 15 years ago.

I know half of that (now demolished) dumb terminal lab would be filled with people playing MUDs back then, so I know I can’t be the only old timer coming around here getting nostalgic.

I’ve tried to play again a few times, but I only do it for a few days. When Everquest came out it was a dream come true, it was truly modeled after MUDs, and since then I never looked back.

Anyways, it’s neat to see the old sloth is still around, albeit greatly changed.

Cheers!

Hmm, I started back in late 1992 or early 1993. Played several small chars Blackwidow, Riverwind, Spawn (shared) and someone else I forget who. God knows how many times I’ve quit and stayed away a couple years only to come back and find Sloth still around. I remember well the day that Strider hit 4x40 for the first time.

Came back for Sloth3 as Myst, Lestat, Xandora, and several dozen others. Never could get the urge to go all the way to 5x40, so I just immorted and built 1/2 dozen areas and remodelled several more. Think the most fun I ever had were in the groups I lead for 5, 6 and 7 hour stretches. Sometimes I wish I had my zmud setup of today back in those days when I had time to play hardcore, so much fun could have been had by all.

So 14 or 15 years invested in this place. Sadly I’ve only ever met Rujo face to face (not sad that I met him :P just sad he’s the only one I’ve ever met).

Hopefully I can spit out a couple more areas before me or this MUD is laid to rest. Be on the lookout ;)

Akasha

ya hopefully

Dunno who, if anyone remembers me from way back when, but I ran around on Sloth I quite a bit back in late 92 thru mid 93. I had Swampman back then and ran around with a couple quys called Cannon and Marauder. We all were from Se Missouri State Univ and played on one of those crappy terminals hooked into an Ancient MUSIC system.

Looking at this thread and thinking for a minute, I guess the old saying that fads come and go but classics stand the test of time really applies to Sloth.

Played as Bayder in SII. Went to Pittsburgh in 1994 (I think) and met several mudders (Wemic, Fred hehe Bagos et al)… Also met 4 guys that lived in Chicago but don’t remember their names. I remember Wedge was on of the char names. There was also someone from Missouri. Maybe Rob (Memnock (Tigris)) remembers who they were. I say a char named Cid but the Cid from SII may have been different.

Jan 2012 : 20 years of Sloth.. we should all meet at the MGM in Las Vegas in early January and get hammered.

I played in ‘92, like most of us I guess. Everyone was going to college, meeting new people, etc. We had a pretty good group playing from Purdue, staying up all night - all weekend at the Math building. We’d mud and print pictures to the big laser printers, then pic up a folder at the end of the morning with all our pics of cars / girls / whatever. I guess that’s when I learned to mix sloth with alcohol, too. If I remember, I had an old 386 PC when I went to campus as a Freshman. I was online, and trying to find a multiplayer version of Moria/Angband when I found a text file mudlist. I had about 6 of us playing Sloth before the end of the year. Memnock (Tigris) was great, we’d have to log onto Sloth and recall him so he’d come to eat with us before the cafeteria closed for dinner. He had a dumb-terminal connected in his room somehow. Another friend had a 486 laptop with a new (faster!) modem. It was probably 33.6, I think my modem was 18.whatever. Makes the head hurt to think that far back.
