What do you consider Playable stats?

·3129 words·15 mins

What stats would you consider playable to 3x or 4x 40?

Personally, I like to go for 1x18 and a sum of 80. Which explains why I am a-rolling again.

-Si

Have 14 18 18 14 16 for ne/dr/ma/cl and think these stats would be interesting to play for such quad caster…

my personal view will be that without 2 x 18 (unless u have 17 18 17 17 16 or something like that), it is pretty hard to maximize your character, especially when you go up to the higher lvls.

Very importantly as well, if the total score is around 81 and above, i would think it’s good enough.

My personal take on it, anyway

heavily depends on classo/play style, i think. If you are a 3x or 4x caster who just sits in groups, the only stats that matter are int and wis, and if those are 17-18, you are fine. People who never or rarely group have to be a bit pickier, and then yeah, 80+ total is a good guidline - do not look at just how many 18 nats you have (I have gotten a few completely unplayable 2x18 rolls for alberich - his current nats are barely 1x18s, but they total out to 82)

also.. it’s just a game, so I suppose, “playable” stats are whatever you feel comfortable venturing out into the wide world of sloth in - not everyone needs have a completely uber char with insane stats, despite the tendancy of some people to focus on it. If you take care in choosing your eq, and how you fight mobs, and most importantly enjoy yourself, it really doesn’t matter what kind of stat roll you wind up with :P

I think classo and play style has a LOT to do with it.

Thieves tend to be somewhat picky I think simply because percent strength is so important. Three of the strength bonuses are at 18/80, 18/90 and 18/100 (+3 dam for stabbing), and trying to get there from 17 str takes about 11 items. If you don’t have the strength naturally, your attacking splork mobs with an increased chance of them living, which is pretty much suicidal.

So every thief that doesn’t have warrior secondary is shooting for 3x18 stats so they can roll the percentile. As a th/wa, I stopped rolling when I got 2x18 with high percentile, even though the rest of my stats are pretty poor.

12345, I disagree.

% strength is not critical for a Th. Convenient, yes. But with the plethora of +str items out there getting 18/100 is doable from 16, 15, and even below. I run +12 damage (Valk max as I read the EQ list) from a nat 16 strength.

There’s that style of play thing…

Doable yes. I think equipment options become too constricted though. I’m mostly basing this on what I carry for equipment. Since I can reach 18/100 by casting the strength spell alone, I am basically free to choose whatever equipment I like.

Even at this, none of it has +str… even as a coinicidence. You could consider that my obsidian pearl is equal to a strength item (JJD), but that would still make it the only one I carry. This gives me the option of carrying AC, +regen, +hp/mana/move, +hit/dam, and other +stat equipment.

Two other points: It’s not very economical to wear +12 in strength to get +6 dam (+4 hit?) and the ability to carry more stuff, I can wear a gimlet, 2x onyx braclets and the thief auto and get the same damage (4 items). Also, any other stat with a 16 can be compensated for 6x easier.

However, choosing what’s acceptable is entirely the perogative of the player. A low strength may be acceptable to you, but I find the drawbacks (as a thief) to be too costly.

SI

you are dead wrong

from 16 str to 18/40 there is about a 2.0 ac drop

that makes a big deal to soloing with a thief these days

there’s only one successful way to play a thief

i don’t care what you think

you must run 18/100 or dont even bother to stab

thats like “the sky is blue” etc

Thieves roll str 3rd unless wa is second

spend the fuckin time to get triple 18s is my suggestion

  1. If Str is [1..3] stat - roll until you get 18/60+

  2. Roll until you get 3x18

  3. Roll until you get last stat 15+

Kinda idealistic, but still possible, isnt it?

Agreed, there is options, but also there is ‘set-in-stone’ things.

Non-caster primes must have Dex 17+ or its harder maximize AC (which is vital, am i right?).

Tank-type must have 18Dex 18Con in AC-mode with best AC-eq available.

Th-prime must have 18/100 or sit in the Inn and chat.

Dont know much about casters - never played one :)

Tho for [Wa Cl Th Ma] i play and enjoy tremendously i’d roll these…

Impz, that 80-81 formula not realy working

Roled my ma/mo/ne/cl 15 18 16 15 16 at first look spify stats, even if use other old rule no stats below 15, recalculated with current ingame equip and cant find 1dex , can afford only

2 dex lose for it(weapon +3x40 shield) rest pozitions need for speldamage

equip , cant afford held high with dex,bracelets,belts,leggings……..,found that for me char without -11ac and 90 speldamage simply not intresting.

IMHO more easy plan equip and roll char to that planed equip

And one more thing if its your first char at game, dont think need go for 3x18-5x18 couldbe after some levels you will found that char not suit your gameplay or classo set totaly wrong or whatever.

Alot depends from time you got, if got 10 or more hrs spend on sloth per day you can put self at reroll hell if not pointless roll god stats unless you friendly with luck. So easy lose game intrest if you rolling char for long time

for casters my vote falls with the double 18’s what else do we really need beyond that…

:?:

Rolled my new Monk/Mage and received 16 17 13 17 18 = 81 points

Doesn’t seem like much but that 16 str is pretty good.

With the right eq, I’ll run 18/100 18 13 18 18. Wis will always be low, unless

I build a regen eq with +WIS. Anyways I think if you can get 1x18 and a

total sum of around 80’ish you should be fine.

I’m curious what you’re planning on wearing thats going to get you

an int point but not a wiz. Right now, with 16 17 14 17 18 Thirteen

is running 18/100 17 14 18 18. Surely you’re not going to scrap something

useful for a measely int ?

Between me and you (and everyone on the forum). I’m thinking about

wearing that diamond pendent. It’s +1str +1int, but with 0 ac. I noticed

your neck is that +str +8mana if I remember correctly. However that 17

to 18 int jump is more then +8 mana. So it might be worth to wear that int.

Well, it looks like everybody consider that 4*18 is NOT playable stats :-)

OK, beyond the joke. I guess, you can’t roll 4*18, is it?

Or nevertheless there IS a very small chance (1/100000?) to roll it?

4x18 is very playable, 3x18 isn’t too bad either if you can get high enough supporting stats (ask Vanyel about his newbie with 18.xx 18 18 12 10…probably great for grouping but could be tough on soloing). What I stop at depends on the classo.

My current newbies have these:

cl ma mo ne 17 18 18 16 15 (84)

mo ne ma cl 16 18 15 17 18 (84)

wa ma mo cl 18.51 18 10 16 15 (77 but still very playable)

mo wa cl ma 18.71 14 14 15 18 (79 and less playable than the 77 above)

ne ma ba dr 15 17 17 16 17 (82, no 18s and very playable)

the mo wa I’m rolling now I’m shooting for 18.5 1x 1x 17 18 because I hate needing 3 dex and I have plenty of other chars I can play while I roll. In fact, I really should get rid of a couple of those newbies…

Argh, I didn’t even realize there was str/int neck or I would use that. Excellent!

Sorry been out of town this weekend. U didn’t realize there was a str/int

neck eq??? How long have you been mudding?

Some of y’all are just spoiled…RR primarily.

Clearly Rr. Jeebus, look at those stats!

18.53 14 16 17 18 on the latest newbie…

I gotta stop rolling newbies and play some…

yeah im, the same way RR

i had to start givin my tokens away to Zam’s newb

but hes statted now so Cipha or Karl!

i had to start givin my tokens away to Zam’s newb

Zam is rolling Zam? Hrm, thought he had good stats

I’m with Avatar…some people are spoiled! :) But seriously, it could be that I’m just used to playing with mediocre stats. I voted 2X18, but I’ve only ever had one character with that. One of my two lowbies has 18/88 3X17. I’m so used to being a weakling that I haven’t really taken the time to figure out a real eq list target for her.

I’m curious about the method RR uses for rerolling. I’ve heard that if you get a bad roll it’s best to wait a tick before rolling again, but I don’t know if that’s any real benefit. I’ve also heard of people blessing tokens, but I’m pretty sure that has no benefit (though it would be cool if it did). I know people who prefer to roll 1 token at a time, and others who collect mountains of them.

Since RR is being sucessful, I’d really like to how he’s doing it. :D

I used to believe it mattered if you waited between rolls. I had too many rolls that were only different by 1 or 2 stats. That was a long time ago, though, and I’ve since changed my mind. I personally think the random number generator was rewritten to be more random, because it doesn’t seem to make nearly the difference it used to.

I think Blackmore hits on an important point. The code for rerolling/randomizing may or may not have changed over any period of time. Most of us just don’t know, but, due to superstitions and other things that make people gamble, we hold on to whatever worked for as long as possible. :)

Back when I messed around with reroll hell, there was a lot of things I ’tried’ in order to improve my chances of rolling well.

-Blessing tokens. If I started a char today, odds are, I’d bless it.

-Removing all items - Helps to see nats, doubt it truly helps/hinders rolling at all. Something I saw other char’s do, but I never did or saw the point in, not only get nekkid, but put on -stat and +ac eq. No sense to that at all :)

-Rolling at different ‘chambers’ Jake’s temple, Nia’s temple, SS, other less travelled rolling houses. BH Med chamber is over used. - Again, seriously doubt there is any truth to this, but it was fun, and I did explore a little more to find new chambers.

-Waiting a tick after a bad roll. - This one was probably the most grounded in ‘reality’ Most computer random number generators take a ‘seed’ value. If you use the same ‘seed’ the result of the call to a system random function is not random at all, which is useful for debugging etc… An ideal seed for more randomness is something based on time, like say the tick, which when we had real ticks may have made more of a difference then now. However, it may have never had anything to do with the tick and always just based itself on system time, I probably will never know and most of us won’t either.

But it sure is fun to try and keep rolling and guessing.

Happy rolling kids!

Partly the reason I’m asking. I’m rolling, and while I’m rolling it’s easy to see patterns. For instance, I rolled 3 rolls yesterday, consecutively, with 18 str and high percent. This was a warrior, and the rest of the stats were near pathetic, on all of them. The next 3-4 rolls were just bad with all stats between 9-14. Again, it looked like there were subtle changes to the seed value that yielded slightly varying results. When changes occured, they appeared abrupt. Most of my best rolls were after a series of dreadful stats, and almost always with my last token.

And of course, when you’re in reroll hell, you think REALLY long and hard before passing up that nice set of stats… which is enough to send you into the next tick (or whatever) worth of stats, so you wouldn’t see the repeating values. Similiarly, blessing a token burns some time as well.

Partly the reason I’m curious how folks are rolling. Lots of superstitions, and some of them might be useful. :)

I’ve often wondered if there’s a chance your stats will only change slightly when you reroll, as opposed to a total reroll. I only say that because it seems like no matter how long I wait, if my stats suck, and I roll them, they occasionally still suck.

That being said, if I get almost keeper stats and am still rolling, I do it really quick to make sure the seed doesn’t change too much, hoping the right stat goes in the right direction. I’ve actually had 2x18 on something like 3 consecutive rolls, so I do think there is some truth to the theories.

From what I can ascertain, it seems most of the time that the stat rolls are individually cyclical, but the frequency of the cycles differ for each stat, so having them all hitting near the peak of their respective cycles at the same time is pretty rare, but it obviously does happen. Of course classo also determines the range of each stat somehow as well.

Actually, perhaps this can illustrate my point best. I record my rerolls, and since I’m home now, I have access to them. These were all rolled at the same time, either yesterday or the day before. Keep in mind that I’m shooting for a dex of 17-18 with these rolls:

Str: 17 / 0, Int: 8, Wis: 9, Dex: 13, Con: 14

Str: 16 / 0, Int: 10, Wis: 12, Dex: 13, Con: 15

Str: 14 / 0, Int: 11, Wis: 12, Dex: 13, Con: 14

—-tick—-

Str: 18 / 84, Int: 9, Wis: 11, Dex: 11, Con: 18

Str: 18 / 55, Int: 11, Wis: 14, Dex: 14, Con: 17

Str: 18 / 53, Int: 13, Wis: 13, Dex: 14, Con: 16

—-tick—-

Str: 16 / 0, Int: 8, Wis: 9, Dex: 9, Con: 14

Str: 15 / 0, Int: 10, Wis: 11, Dex: 13, Con: 13

Str: 14 / 0, Int: 12, Wis: 12, Dex: 14, Con: 14

Figure that it takes me a few seconds to copy the rolls out of wintin and into word, so I do about 3-4 rolls a minute. Judging by what Blackmore posted, it seems a reasonable risk to spam tokens if I get a good roll.

As far as I can tell from careful examination of the code, the random numbers are random. It shouldn’t matter how long you wait; there should be no correlation between successive rolls. I have heard reports of long apparent patterns, but I investigated them at the time several months ago and, given the algorithm for ordering the rolls, discarding low dice, etc., they just weren’t that unlikely. That’s what I think.

I just roll…always as nekkid as I can be though…and if I cant hold enough crap I’ll wear the non +stat stuff only (although thats recent, I used to put it all away until I was nekkid). The rolling nekkid thing comes from way back when I started (1993ish). Either way, I dont wait a tick and rolling fast or slow I’ve seen the same types of streaks so I’m not so sure about that theory.

I used to keep all my rolls but I always lose them so I dont have a record of anything but the last 20 or so…and of those the highest stat total was like 72 until the ones I kept.

I really think the patterns are random and if you see a pattern it’s because you want to see a pattern. The human mind likes to jump to conclusions because we all like things better if we think we understand them.

I think this latest char took as many tokens as the last 3 combined…must have been around 120 or so. (not what those who have spent 500+ tokens want to hear I’m sure).

Oh yeah, I also tend to roll ’em when I get them. I have enough chars to play that I dont need to hoarde them and waste coins paying rent. Anyone who’s been in channel with me the past month knows I tend to switch chars a lot…(so I’m obsessive compulsive and couldnt wait to roll that shiny new token I had just gotten….)

Yeah true, it IS a random number generater.. although when a particular stat is rolling low it tends to (in general) stay low for successive rolls, and slowly build up, and vice versa.. does anyone else notice that, or has it just turned out that way for me for some reason? (I rolled well over 400 hex for Weasel to get stats, mostly in lots of 20 tokens, once with 50 successive rolls (which all sucked btw), but the same vague ‘pattern’ seemed to be apparent throughout.. maybe just a fluke?

shrug
