Yes, I’m at the point where I’m wasting a lot of playing time collecting tokens and trashing decent playable stats trying to win the lottery. :)
I didn’t track my first few re-rolls, but I have for the last 26 rolls.
Range 40 to 90 hits=26
tot for roll____hits____desc______ range___freq
40 to 49_____ 0____Horrible______ 10____ 0.00
53 thru 56____2____sad to bad_____ 4____0.08
57 thru 76___22____usual roll______20___ 0.85
77 thru 80____2____playable/good___4____0.08
81 thru 90____0____fantastic/rare___10____0.00
My 26 re-rolls is too small a sample to get a picture of the outside area of the range.
If you are interested and have kept track of a block of tri-token re-rolls (all rolls, not selected ones) I’d like to add them to my numbers.
thanks, Zing

I have a theory about how rerolls are calculated, I’d be interested to know if (a) I’m right (b) what people think:
4d6 are rolled, the best 3d6 are chosen, this is done 5 times, the outcomes are then ordered as per stat ordering.
This leads to a range 3-18
(I know I haven’t accounted for Strength /?? addition in this)
Possibility ranges for the total stat score (add all stats together):
15 - 58 -> 0.82%
57 - 60 -> 8.32%
61 - 65 -> 25.59%
66 - 70 -> 36.28%
71 - 75 -> 21.78%
76 - 80 -> 5.20%
81 - 90 -> 0.41% (i.e. one in 243 rolls have total score 81 or better)
The most common roll total would be 66 with 95.30% of rolls in the range 57 to 77
Let me know what you think.
Daisy
It’s not really a secret that Daisy is exactly right. The only other addition would be that if an oct is used, or you are getting your stats for the first time, any total with a result of 9 or lower causes the entire group to be discarded and rolled again.
Thanks for providing more information. I think many players wouldn’t re-roll as much if they understood the numbers better.
It is interesting to see how rare a really good roll (80+) would be. Since I’m playing with a 77, and it is quite playable, it truly effects my strategy for improvement.
I had planned on re-rolling whenever I got 10 tokens. This was because I was guessing that 76+ roll would usually happen in a ten roll sequence. This was roughly my experience since I had rolled a 75 and a 77 in 26 rolls. And eventually I’d hit a really great roll.
However, with a good playable 77, (the distribution was ok) I would be shooting for an 80+ roll to be worth the aggravation and risk or re-rolling. I think these numbers mean that I’d need to have 20+ tokens on hand to have a reasonable chance of keeping stats like I already have and would need to roll hundreds to have a decent shot at my goal of 80+ stats.
My 17 17 17 14 12 = 77 (CL/MA) is looking pretty good.
Though I’d like an 18 or two so maybe…
Zing
Well I have “unplayable” stats or been told that. However I believe its
something that I can work with.
18/69 10 13 16 16 = 73 (Wa/Mo/Cl/Dr)
Now this isn’t the greatest, but I believe it’s something that a Tank can
get ac-11 with the right eq and such.
It’s all about how some ppl play the game, and what eq is needed.
Thanks for providing more information. I think many players wouldn’t re-roll as much if they understood the numbers better.
Zing[/quote:2yx40fnd]
I agree Zing. I had stats 18/53 12 12 17 15 (74) for Wa/Ba/Cl/Mo. Everyone I asked said I needed better stats so with 10 tris and 3 I octs rerolled. Not one roll was as good as this and I had to play with really bad stats until I found some more tris. I still have worse stats than I started with - 18/22 10 11 16 15 (70). The oct rolls were barely any better. In a total of 22 rolls (19 tris and 3 octs) none were even as good as I started with. If I’d known the statistics quoted by daisy I would have stuck with the playable, but not wonderful stats, I already had.

t4bwe;Many players who have played for years are willing to roll for months to get insane stats, and they seem to think that’s what everyone should do too. In the end, if you’re just learning the game, you’re missing out on a lot of fun by staying on valk until you get the stats that some people say you should have. There’s nothing wrong with playing with mediocre stats and waiting until you’re bigger to get hexes. I’d hate to see newbies quit because they’re bored with the game when they can’t get the 84 total that people claim they need.
While Blackmore makes a decent point, I’d counter with the fact that such ’true’ newbies don’t have the necessary equipment to make up for bad stats…. we’ve all seen the veterans gossip stats that truly only an insane person would try to roll (guilty as charged) but in doing so, they only give exactly what the newbies want to know. Most of a time a newbie gossiping his/her stats and just having bad dex is enough to get many peeps tossing mad stats. BM also makes the point that newbies missing out on alot of fun because they stick themselves in re-roll hell but most newbies not gonna have much fun trying to explore with them being unable to solo. Could make another point or 2 but blasted Van doesn’t allow botting so that’s all for now
I pleased you found my stats helpful, I ought to say that I’m not a mathematician (I’m an Engineer actually) and I’m quite prepared for someone to prove my probability calculations incorrect, I found the calculations quite complex, but I did write a program to repeatedly reroll stats and note results as a sanity check (this I found very simple) and on 50,000 rolls it tied up quite nicely.
I would however be facinated if some Mathematics guru out there could detail what the right probability equation should look like.
That said part of my reason for posting was to try and bring some sanity to conversations like the below (names removed):
AAA gossips ‘I got 3 tokens left should I reroll’
BBB gossips ‘reroll’
CCC gossips ‘what are your stats’
BBB gossips ‘reroll anyway’
AAA gossips ’ 17 18 14 15 12 what do you think'
(Total 78 - in my view playable for a M/W/C/T and a one in 20ish or better roll)
DDD gossips ’not bad but reroll anyway'
EEE gossips ’ not good either'
FFF gossips ‘g’luck :P’
CCC gossips ’ playable stick with them til you’ve got more tokens'
BBB gossips ‘you need to reroll good luck’
AAA gossips ‘Thanks guys’
…
AAA gossips ‘wtb tri tokens’
This is the sort of conversation I’m sure you’ve all seen many many times, I know I have and what it amounts to is a newbie who has good stats, playable until 4x20 being egged on by more experienced players who ought to know better to waste ‘good’ stats chasing the ‘keeper’ stats that are possible with dedicated token chasing.
Its no wonder that the game has changed from an adventure mud with a strong quest extension to a token chase for everyone below 4x20 and some above this level looking for tokens for alt characters.
The current going rates for tokens seems to be:
Tri 50k
Hex 100k
Oct 150k
but I’ve seen them sold for (and have sold them for) much much more … my record is selling a hex and 3 tris for 500k.
Searching for, finding and using tokens to reroll stats is a very innovative slant on the MUD, one I like, but its been whipped up to a ridiculous frenzy by players who egg newbies on to chase better stats, and players who will spend a week chasing tokens and rerolling to get stats with one more strength, rather than find a piece of equipment that would do the same, along the way sweeping newbie areas clean of tokens so that newbies can’t find them.
Perhaps this frenzy would be better calmed down? Saying that I’m guilty of searching for tokens to sell for money, and buying tokens cheaply for resale as a group (free market economy and all that), and of course I rerolled til I got my 1 in 400 roll (on 120th roll) of 18/80 18 17 17 14 as a M/W/C/T … yes it a boast, I’m proud, but was it a waste of time chasing down 120 token to do that? perhaps, but it certainly gave me a buzz when I got them! then again maybe I’m just sad? (see paragraph one :) )

It would actually be more helpful I think if folks knew the odds of getting a specific stat.
For instance, in the conversation you mentioned, as a mana type, the stats of interest are pretty much int and wis. Most mana types would want 18 int and 17 wis as a minimum. As a mage prime, wis will always be 3rd stat unless you’re rolling a mage/cleric or mage/druid. If you want to save some time rolling, you can always play a mage/cleric/warrior/thief, get the easy 2x18 or 18/17 stats and move on. If you play a mage/warrior, you’re shooting for 16+ wis… which will be a few rolls, especially if you’re shooting for percent strength with it. If you’re looking to solo a lot, and want 15+ dex with it… be prepared to spend a month collecting tokens and rolling.
I think where a lot of folks get hung up is thinking that 10 tokens is a lot, and it’s really not. Last time I was rolling, I was gathering and rolling 8 tokens a day. It took me more than a month to get stats I liked, and I was only rolling for 18 18 17… and I was playing almost every day at the time.
Zing,
the algorithm I wrote was a calculation of total stat value, now I’m a geek but there is a limit, (I’m not working out %chances of your 3rd stat being 15 or better etc.), I can post my full calculation results if you want to see them but they’re rather long so I’ll only do that if requested.
Note that since my last post someone I work with has redone the calculation from scratch and come up with a slightly different result posted below, its up to you which you believe, but my experience favours my results.
I’m not going to work on this or worry much about this any more if you want to I would be very interested to read it.
15 - 40 -> 0.81%
41 - 50 -> 4.89%
51 - 60 -> 39.72%
61 - 65 -> 29.66%
66 - 70 -> 18.73%
71 - 75 -> 6.04%
76 - 80 -> 0.85%
81 - 85 -> 0.04%
86 - 90 -> 0.0002%
(In these results the chances of getting 80 are better slip from 1 in 423 in my calculation to 1 in 1247 with these ….. hmmmmm)
The most common roll total would be 62 with 95.18% of rolls in the range 49 to 73 (2.58% below 49 2.25% above 73)
Total possible outcomes : 3,656,158,440,062,980
Note there is only one way of getting 15 as all of 20 dice must roll 1 to get 15, there are many more ways to get 90 as you can afford to drop any one die in each 4 to get 5 lots of 18.

you can postulate all you want, but in the end you just have to shut up and reroll and no amount of algorithm-arguing will make it easier. btw those ma/wa stats suck, he rolls str second and doesnt even have %, plus 12 con..
keep goin, and gl :)

Can always count on AA to post some mean response :-P
I believe he rolled some PIMP stats …
“and of course I rerolled til I got my 1 in 400 roll (on 120th roll) of 18/80 18 17 17 14 as a M/W/C/T … yes it a boast, I’m proud, but was it a waste of time chasing down 120 token to do that? perhaps, but it certainly gave me a buzz when I got them! then again maybe I’m just sad? (see paragraph one )”
I’m not a math guru… but I find brute force works well.
Some simple probability rules for you:
Rolling 18 on 3d6 = 1:6x6x6 = 1:216 rolls, about 0.46%
So 1 every 216 stats.
Sloth uses 4 dice, which ups the odds some:
Rolling 18 on 4d6 = 21:6x6x6x6 = 21:1296 rolls, about 1.62%
So about 1 every 61.7 stats.
21 you ask? You have to manually count them:
1666 6166 6616 6661
2666 6266 6626 6662
3666 6366 6636 6663
4666 6466 6646 6664
5666 6566 6656 6665
6666
Editted to remove silly calculations. Icefyre has a better method.
Someone asked “What are the REAL chances of winning the stat lottery?”
Ok, this is all done assuming the reroller uses 4d6, dropping worst d6.
Chances of getting 1 18’s = 4.63% (1 in 21.6)
Chances of getting 2 18’s = 0.17% (1 in 583)
Chances of getting 3 18’s = 0.0047% (1 in 21,000)
And you wonder why it’s called reroll hell, trying to roll 3X18’s to get a %str on your third stat.
When using oct’s, it throws out a lot of bad possibilities (only 135 possible outcomes instead of 216 for a 3d6 roll).
Chances of getting 1 18’s = 7.41% (1 in 13.5)
Chances of getting 2 18’s = 0.44% (1 in 228)
Chances of getting 3 18’s = 0.0195% (1 in 5125)
Now, I look at my 2x40 thief/caster with 2 18’s and a 17 str? for the biggest char improvement…dropping 3-5 str slots that’ get me to -7 or -8 ac with full damage.
BUT, i’m going to save up a whole hell of a lot of tokens before it try.
So, last conclusion: oct’s at 150k are a steal when your chances are 4X better at getting your dream stats.
OK, I screwed up my calc on how to drop the last d6 numbers, but 12345 showed me the errors of my ways:
Do it again:
chances of 1 18: 8.1% 1/12 tokens
chances of 2 18: 0.52% 1/190 tokens
chances of 3 18: 0.025% 1/3917 tokens
For octagonals:
Not going to recalc the percentages, but I would still theorize it’s 4X better for 3 18’s.
you can postulate all you want, but in the end you just have to shut up and reroll and no amount of algorithm-arguing will make it easier. btw those ma/wa stats suck, he rolls str second and doesnt even have %, plus 12 con..

A few points:
str second and dosen’t even have a % Ermmmm I think I said 18/80
plus 12 con Errmmmmmm I think I said 14
he rolls Ermmmmmmm I was a woman last time I looked
I’m still proud of my stats … keep rolling yourself no one else is going to do it for you :)

He was referring to your AAA BBB CCC conversation you have posted.
Also, what method did Icefyre use to calculate the percentages? I know I’ve rolled a fair number of 2x18s in 100 rolls.
Using the probability of 1.62% to roll an 18 for 4d6 dropping 1d6,
you have 5 chances on a roll to get an 18.
For 2 and 3 18’s, using conditional probability, (i.e., you already have 1 18) then you have 4 chances to get another 18, and 3 to get a third, with the same 1.62%, multiplied by the previous probability for the first and second 18’s.
So. P2 = P1 * 41.62%, and P3 = P2 * 31.62%.
It’s pretty straightforward. The harder part is determining the number of possible outcomes.
Fine: I recalculated Oct’s as well. Unfornately, it’s not as improved as first erroneously predicted. Number of states is only 1069 vs the std 1296. So, it’s only twice as good or so.
For 1 18: 9.8% (1/10)
For 2 18: 0.77% (1/130)
For 3 18: 0.0045 (1/2198)
Ok… this was bothering me, so I decided to figure it out:
Odds of rolling each stat:
03 - 1:1296 (0.08%)
04 - 4:1296 (0.31%)
05 - 10:1296 (0.77%)
06 - 21:1296 (1.62%)
07 - 38:1296 (2.93%)
08 - 62:1296 (4.78%)
09 - 91:1296 (7.02%)
10 - 122:1296 (9.41%)
11- 148:1296 (11.42%)
12 - 167:1296 (12.89%)
13 - 172:1296 (13.27%)
14 - 160:1296 (12.35%)
15 - 131:1296 (10.11%)
16 - 94:1296 (7.25%)
17 - 54:1296 (4.17%)
18 - 21:1296 (1.62%)
I’m leaning more and more toward the idea that rolls get a +1 to them.
This is what I suspect the actual odds are:
04 - 1:1296 (0.08%)
05 - 4:1296 (0.31%)
06 - 10:1296 (0.77%)
07 - 21:1296 (1.62%)
08 - 38:1296 (2.93%)
09 - 62:1296 (4.78%)
10 - 91:1296 (7.02%)
11 - 122:1296 (9.41%)
12- 148:1296 (11.42%)
13 - 167:1296 (12.89%)
14 - 172:1296 (13.27%)
15 - 160:1296 (12.35%)
16 - 131:1296 (10.11%)
17 - 94:1296 (7.25%)
18 - 75:1296 (5.79%)
Using these numbers, only 136:1296 (10.5%) of the stats rolled would be 9 or less. Over 5 stats, this gives about a 50% chance of the set being rerolled for an oct token… which is just about what I worked it out to be when we were playing with octs a few months ago. So, I have good confidence that this is close to actual.
I got this same distribution. Except, it’s 136 results are less than 9, if you add in the 91 cases for a 9, you get a total of 227/1296 or 17.5% that are rerolled. [1+4+10+21+38+62+91 = 227].
If that’s true, then it’s 87% chance (5*17.5) that any roll will need to be rolled again because of a low stat on an oct.
I meant, I got the same distribution in your first post…what happened to a 3 value in your second post? Your stat didn’t include dropping the low die roll, it started with a 4. So, I would add in the other 91 cases you had listed at a 10.
Simple, I added +1 to each result, so the 3s became the 4s and so on up to 18, which is the total of 17 and 18 together. I did this for 2 reasons:
Many months ago, I was trying to decide if octs were worth it, so I collected all my tri/hex rolls and those of other players. In the end, I determined that only about half had a stat of 9 or less and would be rerolled. Oddly, the 10.5 percent works into this rather nicely.
During that same time, I was rolling a fair number of 18s. They were usually followed immediately by garbage, and I don’t think I was pulling in quite 1 in 4.. but the frequency wasn’t horrid. This also follows on that line. I’d have to check out my reroll file to get the exact percentage though.
What I don’t like about it is that it figures using these numbers and your equation that a 3x18 happens about 1 in 90 rolls.. and I rolled over 200 and never got one. Then again, I know folks that rolled like 10 times and got stats better than I’ve ever dreamed of. Go figure… law of averages and the universe hates me.
Another thing, while I’ve RARELY heard of someone rolling a 4, I think the only 3 I’ve seen was wearing eq. This also fits with that.
It’s a guess. It could very well be wrong, but so could everything else that’s been posted. It fits better with my experience than the others, so at the moment, it’s my favorite theory. If you have reason to believe it’s wrong, I’d love to hear it :)
yeah ummm.. the 3x18 occurring 1 in 90 rolls just doesn’t ring true for me at all- although classo may have a big effect on this.
With all my chars combined, I would’ve rolled around 1,000 tokens, maybe a bit more rather than less, and guess how many 3x18’s I got?
None. Zip. Nada.
They are all WA primes with old classos, except for 1 char, which strangely enough rolled a 2x18 nat relatively quickly (Cl Ma Wa Th).
I have two theories regarding rolling. One is that each stat cycles high to low, but the frequency of the cycles differ from stat to stat, and the range of each cycle also varies depending on classo. The other theory is that rerolls are in part dependent on the time of day when you roll the token (unsure if it’s mud time or real time though), but would need a lot of data to make this more than just a theory.
Well, going over my old rolls, I don’t think I’m far off. I was rolling an 18 about every 4 rolls, and had a fair number of 2x18. Probably why I couldn’t roll an 3x18… all my spare 18s went to 2x18s instead.
If its any help on the question of what are the odds of 0/1/2/3/4/5 18s when rerolling its fairly simple to write a program to replicate the reroll on Sloth and have a look at the results, if you do this enough times you should get something statistically fairly accurate, the time for such a process to run is much quicker if you discard the actual results and only note a counter on the number of 18s found, therefore it is possible to use a much bigger sample.
I’ve written a VBA script that does just this, and on 100 million rolls I got the following:
no 18s 92,198,879 (92.2%)
one 18 7,552,235 (7.6%)
two 18s 245,545 (0.2%)
three 18s 3,293 (0.003%)
four 18s 48 (0.00005%)
five 18s 0 (0%)
If you want the script (its fairly simple and took me 10 mins to write and about 5 mins to run) feel free to email me or request it here.
Now the thing that strikes me most about this is that over 100million rolls you’d expect it to reflect the sloth experience quite well, in my view it dosen’t, I’ve seen 2 18s much more often than 1 in 500 rolls. I think the model I proposed near the beginning of this thread, which this script is based on, therefore should be seen as suspect and as such most of the odds calculated in this thread by my myself and others are probably just as suspect.
Let me know what you think.
Lots of Love,
Daisy
Anyone ever noticed if ur get Awsome stats, it’s never like 18 18 15 12 10?
It’s usually like 18 18 17 16 14 or something really close. Or if u get crap
rolls its like reaaaaaaal crappy 17 15 13 11 9?
I never had a roll that was like 18 18 and then 14 12 10… Or maybe it’s
just me throwing more shit in the fan :)
I did what Daisy did using Excel and got the same results, BTW.
As for really close awesome rolls, I’ve actually had both. I rolled an 18/x 18 16 18 17 on on char, but also rolled an 18/x 9 17 18 18 on another, with that one crappy stat (I did keep that roll BTW). Then I have had the kind of intermediate 18/x 18 13 18 15 type roll.
But guys remember Illich before you go for the mega stat! 750 rolls and he still hasn’t rolled a triple 18.
Is there any way of asking a Mud admin / developer to clear up once and for all time exactly what the formular is for stat rolling?
This may seem a purely academic excercise to some, but it can help inform decisions about whether to stick with okayish stats or carry on rolling and perhaps never get as good again.
Out of interest my alt as a W/M rolled:
18/89 18 11 16 14 Total 77
I’m fairly confident I could roll better given time, but is it worth the effort it would take? Its supremely playable as it is esp as Dex is so easy to raise by +2.

Daisy

Sorry, that is the sort of internal info about the code that we don’t tell you. Although frankly it seems from this thread that you all have a pretty good understanding of it, so I’m not sure that even if we did give you further info it would change anything.

Honestly Daisy, short of a miracle roll, that’s really nice. Shooting for a higher dex or con will likely cost your str and int. I’d collect a small mountain of tokens before I considered rerolling it. I haven’t done it in a while, but lockers on Valk are cheap and can hold 10 tokens each. With a small army of Valkers you can collect mountains of tokens if you really want to reroll. For a non-dedicated player though, those are quite nice.
That’s part of the fun!
“I’m fairly confident I could roll better given time, but is it worth the effort it would take? Its supremely playable as it is esp as Dex is so easy to raise by +2.”
That’s the type of question that every player here has to answer on his/her own. You can’t make a simple rule-based decision tree that tells based on classo and point total whether a character should reroll or not. For myself, even as a dedicated player, I’ve been content with much lower stats than some of our other long-term players. God-stats aren’t as important to me as all that. I’ve gotten lucky with some of my characters but others have not been so lucky.
Ahh, it’s nice to see people are stat junkies now just like I was back in the day…
My SlothMUD III version of Zorich (pre-wipe) was my best incarnation of him. 18/87 Str, 17 Int, 18 Wis, 16 Dex, 16 Con. Was C/W/M/T.
Got that on my 2nd reroll and was left sitting with 38 to give away to the first people to guess my rediculous trivia questions :).
Wow, a lifer.
So, when are you adding those elemental citadels :)
Nice to see you’re still around…

You know - that’s a funny story. We actually had em pretty much done at one point. I was doing the Fire and Air, ElSol was doing Water, and Snakes was doing Earth. Between the Four of em, we had over 2500 rooms :).
I actually had the EQ requests in for my two areas as well as a lot of new-style content I wanted to add - but there were a few things holding me back from getting it completed in total.
- Walkthroughs were nigh impossible to get done. I admit - I kinda resented that I needed more walkthroughs after having done the Ethereal Plane and the 4 Pocket Planes - but what could be done - it was the rules.
When I did get a walkthrough (The one for the Fire Citadel took over 2 months to get someone to look at) - it rarely got done. My frustration was that there were a set of rules for descriptions I followed and rather than judge the work per the rules and it’s content, a certain person at the time kept trying to re-write it the way they wanted, and it got on my nerves and sapped my desire to work on it further.
I had graduated college and found that I didn’t have much time left to play. Work wasn’t nearly as flexible as classes, and I found my ability to get in touch with the people who would get the area approved more and more difficult.
There was a player wipe coming. This is a purely selfish reason - but I knew damn well I didn’t have time to level up another Triple-40 character, and I hated the idea that I had earned dozens of quest-only items that I’d never see again. Unique things (at the time) like the Blue-Edged Dagger (3d4 +3, +2, Mana Drain Proc), Dreaming Sleeves (?AC, +10 Mana, +2 Mana Regen), White Marble Bracer, Mage’s Pouches, Staff of Fire (2d6 +2 Hit, +1 Int, Fire Proc) and Mace of Flames (3d5 +2, +2, Fire Proc) as well as other rare quest items like Crystal Sleeves, Nekodes, Great Helm, Ring of Wizardry x2, Onyx Staff…
The only thing I could do in light of a wipe - and more specifically a wipe where I couldn’t even get some kind of redemption token for all the rare stuff I’d earned - was walk away. If I put in those areas, I’d have been driven to level up and run them. I’d have been driven to start all over again, playing 40+ hours a week. I knew I’d wreck my schedule to make time for quests so I could build back up my item cache (I was far too competitive). I would be doing all this cause I’d want to see people running my area. Just like with the Ether, I’d want to lead a group into my own area and pwn it. I’d have wanted, as a player, to show people some of the secrets I had in there (there were over 700 rooms in the Fire Citadel alone) by overcoming the obstacles…
In any event, I’d have been compelled to stay around, and I couldn’t do that to myself :(.
It’s kind of the same reason I don’t make a new character and play now. I just wouldn’t have time, and my wife may damn near kill me :).
If you happen to have the area, mob and eq descs around on disk somewhere, we’d love to get them in game. Send them to us and depending on how far along they are, it’s a possibility that someone can upload the areas for everyone to enjoy.
I always loved the planes.

Hrm, Fredd was way fucking funny. I think you got time to play some sloth
Dann, you just don’t know it yet :}

Actually, I may still have the areas for Fire and Air. I don’t think I have the descs, but I do have the old maps for em, the mobs and the Eq I wanted to get in there. If I can dig it up, I’ll let ya know.
My only request is if they go in, I get some honorable mention in the “Legends of SlothMUD” list ;).
Hehe.
I always loved the planes.

You know, I was surprised at how well the planes were liked. I really tried to make something different. The area was practically unmappable cause it was just a 6x6x3 Cube with warping edges. Finding conduits was quite the challenge at first, let alone finding the way in through the Mage’s tower.
I also really enjoyed the opening quest for the area, but in retrospect I think I made it a bit too daunting. Most area-opening quests were just hacking through the area with a few beefy mobs thrown in - I had the two parties strewn all over the MUD getting clues to get the key for the entrance, find where the entrance was, and then, of course, track down the elemental guardians when they were missing from their elemental plane. (Fire was in Hell, Earth was in SS, Air was in Castle Black and Water was in the Demon Web. Then, when all that was said and done, they had to go take a run at the Elementalist.
Good times…

Yeah, Fredd was friggin hilarious at times. I actually haven’t talked with him going on quite a few years now - which kinda sucks. He was a good guy - life just took us in different directions.
But no, I probably won’t be playing. I actually tried to log in and found that Zorich already exists! WTF! That’s messed up. :)
I always liked the planes too, and I kinda miss the mage tower. I used to love finding rooms where it was obvious a connection SHOULD be to more rooms, but was closed. It kind of fuels the imagination to think what could be there…what should be there. Some areas just seem so ‘right’ for Sloth, when they fit with the rest of the atmosphere. I think the planes always did that.
I also for some reason liked the areas that connected to multiple areas. The old sewers on BH, when you could get there from either the sewer entrance or the secret door in the thieve’s guild. Then it connected to the cemetary, sahaguins, ocean, duergar, etc. I always enjoyed that, for some reason. I’d run to through the sewers to get to Lycanthropia, or the dwarves beyond there. I loved the old citadel, and the forges from metal ingots. We need another area added there, away from civilization :)
I’d love to see more areas link, where it makes sense. A cavern wilderness area that would connect moria to demonweb would be quite cool. UD also, perhaps, through secret doors and etc.
Ah well, good memories :)
I hear ya man.
I always wanted to expand the Ether at some point and put in more conduits. I figured there were no-brainers where conduits could link to… Like somewhere deep inside Hell, and of course, somewhere just beyond the Guardian Angel.
If I had stuck around, my next project(s) after the Elemental Citadels was going to be The Underworld (Greek). If you couldn’t tell, I was really into the whole Outer-Planes concepts for high-level characters.
I wanted to create 3 sections of it…
The Valley of Lost Souls & River Styx
The Gates of Forbiddance (Cerberus, etc…)
The Palace of Hades.
Once inside the gates it was going to be all no-recall (such as Hades was inescapable) save a few places that could be discovered via clues and certain objects. As much as that enticed me, I really liked the idea of trying to incorporate Charon and the boat ride from the Abyss (DemonWeb) to Hell along the River Styx. I thought it would be great plot to link the lower planes together with a concept common to many mythologies.
And of course, you know if The Underworld was a hit, Olympus was next ;). Then maybe the Elysium Fields… Ahh, the thing I loved about that was that those area could be nearly limitless in content - and had great potential for Avatar+ level characters.
Heh, but it’s been so long - for all I know those could already be in there :).
The equation for this was bothering me… so I tried something different. Keep in mind I still think rerolls are using 4d6+1. :)
It basically comes down to the odds of 5x18 have to be (75/1296)^5. That’s about 0.000065% or 1 in 1,540,702 rerolls.
To roll 4x18, you need 3x18 and have 2 chances to roll the last 18:
(75/1296)^3 x (2 x 75/1296) = 0.0022% or 1 in 44,581 rerolls.
3x18: (75/1296)^2 x (3 x 75/1296) = 0.058% or 1 in 1720 rerolls.
2x18 17: (75/1296)^2 x (3 x 169/1296) = 0.13% or 1 in 763 rerolls.
18 17 17: 75/1296 x 169/1296 x (3 x 169/1296) = 0.30% or 1 in 338 rerolls.
2x18: 75/1296 x (4 x 75/1296) = 1.34% or 1 in 75 rerolls.
18 17: 75/1296 x (4 x 169/1296) = 3.02% or 1 in 33 rerolls.
1x18: 5x 75/1296 = 28.94% or 2 in 7 rerolls.
This doesn’t seem too far off to me.
