SpellSave VS resist fire/cold

·820 words·4 mins

How do you think, what is better to have: high SpellSave or resist?

Or, maybe, these things are absolutely incomparable? :-)

As I understand, high resist can save up to 98% of damage, but only for cold/fire based attacks.

And SpellSaves gives only 50% on each spell, and there is a chance of being unaffecting.

Is it true?

Thanks for replies :-), Assirian.

When opponents blast fire/cold, resistance helps more than -spellsaves. However, -spellsaves helps vs. other types of blasts, mobs casting blindness, poison, and other things.

Since fire/cold attacks are quite a bit more common than the other things I cited, +resist equipment will serve you better overall.

The way I look at it, spell saves affect alot more than resist fire does. I always load up on saves, then get the gravy resists. Minstrel uses a rose oil on Ivy Guards but a minidemon on the cloak, this is because rose oil wont detach, otherwise it would be saves.

I dont know any way to get to 98% resist. Resist takes (100%-resist)* resisteq%. , once you cast resist fire, minidemon (10 points) puts you at 55%, then every 10 more points you add it keeps getting lower, ie 60%+(10%*40) =64%

Y not wear Ivy Guard + Rose Oil and White Cloak + Rose Oil. Thats -3

saves just on neck.

Saves is usually an all or nothing thing. For blasting spells, you take full damage unless you make your save, in which case you take half. For other spells, like blindness, you save to be completely unaffected.

Whether you save or not, resists will lower the damage you take. So, if you have resist fire, which is 50% resist, and you take an unsaved blast to the chest, you’ll have 50% damage. This is nice in the fact that it doesn’t have a roll associated with it, so it will always work, unlike saves. However, they effectively stack. So if you save vs. the firewind attack, you’re at 50% damage, and if you have resist fire up, you take 25%.

You can basically toss a spellshield on top of that to take the remaining 25% damage for you and you won’t feel a thing. Having resists and saves and such is a good way to extend the life of your shield if you’re having trouble keeping it up, etc.

The major problem with resists is that there’s not a lightning resist really… except for perhaps spectral shield. Acid and some other stuff can only be saved, etc.

I didn’t think that resist fire would lessen the amount of damage striking the shield…are you sure?

I think the wind actually has to hit you for any of it to be reduced by a resist spell. I want a goddamn resist lightning clasp/spell.

I thought before any spells to hit you it goes Saves, Shield, Resist, and Reduce.

Unless reduce damage is for physical and not spells (shrug).

I dont wear the rose oil because im already capped in charisma and you cant detach it. I already had a tiger fur cloak with rose oil and I traded it. I just wear the minidemon on there. I end up losing 1 save for 10 resist fire or cold, and I can remove minidemon when I want. I have never tested the spellshield theory but it would be nice to know.

Positive? Not really, only going by my experience in Theris and such. Seems if I have no resists my shield poofs about as fast as I can put it up, but with resist fire it holds an extra wind or two.

I would imagine someone could test it, but since I try to keep all three up as a matter of profession, I’ll continue to do it, wether its right or wrong.

I tested this by raising a 120 mana spell shield and blasting until it fell. With resist cold, the shield collapsed on the third frostbolt, and I sustained 0 dmg. Without resist cold, the shield also collapsed on the third frostbolt, and I sustained thirteen damage. It appears that resist cold does not help to perserve a spell shield.
