Quest… Area Opener of new Lyme area… Mount ‘An Mystica

Quest will be Saturday, April 19th at 10pm eastern USA.

You must be on SS by 10pm on the 19th

The quest will be divided into three parts… there will be drachma if you guys are good enough to get it.

I am going to try to make it fast and quick, possibly a 3 to 4 hour quest. So pay attention and have fun. :)

-Tox

dont forget teh tarrasques!

I am going to try to make it fast and quick, possibly a 3 to 4 hour quest..[/quote:1uynf2td]

..so prepare to die often, and expect no mercy?

Hope I can make it. :D

[quote:2cuw0zmz]I am going to try to make it fast and quick, possibly a 3 to 4 hour quest.[/quote:2cuw0zmz]

Can you make it so fast that quest is tonite on April 12?

oh 19th? for some reason I read that as 12th.. my bad.

Awesome, you guys go get your fun. Another quest run in the middle of the night for half of us.

Question: Is the reward just the area if ‘we are not good enough for drachma’ or are there items given along with drachma and the area if we’re good enough for drachma?

Question: How much wood could a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?

[quote:2alzru01]Question: How much wood could a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?[/quote:2alzru01]

Who cares!

I think Gumbi is asking… If the group isn’t good enough for drachma reward, then is the reward just the area, or, if the group satisfies the drachma reward are they going to get eq too (as well as a new area and drachma).

Again, 4a.m. for me so… Who cares!

And here’s the #2 reason why I gave up on running quests. If you participate in the quest, you should do so with NO expectations. Asking what we get for playing before we even play? Shrug

Good luck Tox.

Aka

lmfao…. maybe i should try that with my boss.

so.. will i get a raise even if i dont do anything? and how much different would that be if i actually participated?

hahahahaha

We look at the eqlist and we see those weekly forges and quest objs that are effectively unattainable. So we are always dying to know if there’s a chance of getting something like that. Can’t really fault us too much for that.

Giving out quest eq often leads to bickering and bad feelings. Giving out drachma and honor is definitely a better system. It would be nice if more of the quest eq on the eq list was available for purchase with drachma. Maybe with Rank Restrictions?

It would be interesting to take the concept a step further and give out drachma reward according to the honor rank of the pc involved in the quest. I.e. reward majors more than sergeants more than privates more than non-enrolled. It would be easy enuff to make one of those drachma splinters that does that.

One last random suggestion: put in an armory where pc’s could take out eq like at the temples, but instead of sac points, it would be based on honor rank.

Anyway, looking forward to the quest!

95% of Juggleblood idea’s are awesomeness. 5% are weird… like that lose honur for talking in group thing… This one falls in the 95%! Looking forward to the day they make you a coder… erm, you can code right?

Although it might be nice if running honor constantly didn’t become a prerequisite for obtaining decent eq.

At the risk of banging on about something I’ve been vocal about in the past, sorting out a defined system for handling quest eq would fix a ton of problems. Not the least of which being that imms might be inclined to run more quests, which are good for more than what you get at the end, as I’m sure everyone agrees.

Drachma and honor are useful rewards for a quest, but there’s a certain visceral pleasure in actual equipment being handed out.

Everyone is used to not getting what they want, both in real life and in Sloth, and obviously it would be ridiculous to hand out enough quest eq for everyone to get something. But people will always feel shafted if there’s no chance at all to get it.

I’ve never witnessed a quest that didn’t involve the feeling that the recipients of the best eq were predefined, even if only because there was no organized means of handing it out.

Before anyone responds, I would like to point out that my opinions are not based on any kind of bitterness over never being part of the “in crowd” that receives quest eq. But a desire for the mud at large to be able to enjoy having more quests again, something that I doubt will happen without the inevitable end seeming less contrived.

Edit: Didn’t actually notice that this was Brad’s quest thread before replying, so… Thanks for running a quest, will be looking forward to it :)

Yea I just found out I will be out that Saturday … :(

However I don’t like Juggle’s idea regarding the lvl of honor would be the

number of drachma one would get. Not all of us can mud 24/7 and tons

of honor.

Same with the quest eq usually being handed to leader, and tank. There

really isn’t a good system on how to give quest eq out. Giving drachma is

one of the best system that was put in. Keeps everyone at a fair lvl. Also

leader, tanks, healos, blasters, and clue finders can be awarded more drachma.

I know this hasn’t been brought up for awhile. But I recall Splork saying that

one day they will try to add a drachma shop that you can buy/forge the item.

This was about maybe 2yrs ago? Has this plan been put on the back burner?

Yeah, I guess you guys got points… an eq system based on honor points like it is now, may not work to well… but with changes It can! and it should! You don’t HAVE to kill Atlas to get honor points…

If you don’t mud much, tough luck, I doubt you got much drachma either… nor decent eq. But with that said I think Juggle favors the idea because Rub is probably already a major or something.

Quest times, you can’t do much about… We are all over the world… You can never please everyone.

Handling out EQ to let the players decide who get’s it is a REALLY bad idea. I mean the game is made to encourage grouping, and then they do this thing that makes everyone fight and resent each other… and you expect grouping to still be fun and enjoyable afterwards when everyone hates each other? Scratching our backs with butchers knifes…

The other problem is say you random for quest eq… the mage gets the tank eq, and the tank gets the mage eq… whoops! Eq isn’t a well suited reward for group quests. Eq is far better suited for auto’s and forges. A points system such as drachma is far better suited.

Yes, put those quest eq’s into the drachma shops, or make them gettable some other way! :)

This current quest may not suit a lot of people, but don’t lash out at Toxis… cause then Toxis gets the attitude that Akasha has… and then we are all down the toilet! So thanks Toxis for putting this on! Next time I would not announce it so early… then this wouldn’t happen… as much ;)

my2cents: Quests are meant to be fun.. and usually involve a lot of death if you’re one of the chars up front.. and sometimes everyone gets nailed, but imho you should join a quest for the experience of questing itself, and if there’s a reward at the end, consider it a bonus!

If there’s gonna be a reward, then I think evenly distributed crackma has proved to be one of the best options, based on past history. Voting used to be good, until I started seeing quests where clans voted only for fellow clan members even if they did jack sh*t, while other players who contributed heaps went away with nothing but a feeling of resentment, so unfortunately that method is now rendered useless..

Personally I believe the leader always deserves something extra - organizing a group is a headache, especially a quest-sized group. I may be speaking with some bias, but I do believe the tanks deserve at least some recognition - sure it’s a default position, but they get killed over and over and over and if they shock (which is bound to happen occasionally), that’s one hell of a penalty just for being that prime class. There are always others who stand out through their knowledge of the mud, or their actions in the quest. Ultimately though, it should be up to the immort running the quest to decide who to reward, if anyone, and if you can’t accept that, then don’t join. Either that, or use the ‘random’ command for any eq - nobody can complain about unfairness then.

Re linking it to rank, sorry but I’m definitely not for that on a personal level. I stopped joining rank groups because almost every time I joined, I came out with at least 100mil less exp than when I started, if not several hundred mil exp lost. When you solo a lot, that is a significant hit. I believe it’s not so bad anymore, but I’ve kind of missed that boat somewhat now. Making quest rewards (if any) link to rank would mean tanks getting doubly penalized just because they’re a tank. Great if you sit lower down in the group order and don’t die all the time I guess.. LOL.. you’d also be creating a “rich get richer, poor get poorer” effect, and those who might shine in quests may end up losing out because of something not even remotely related to the quest, the result - resentment.

Whatever, thanks Toxis for the opportunity to explore a new area and die horribly in the process.

All this talk about “hypothetical” quest eq is exactly why you’re not likely to see any. But since y’all brought it up…

Honor is divied out like coins, everyone gets his/her equal share (just with rank based caps). Simply being part of the group certainly doesn’t make you worthy of quest eq.

And I have to disagree with Weasel. Quests are usually very cool in concept but can be a pain in the azz–especially for whomever is leading. Always spammy, often lots of crashes and usually something goes wrong with a quest item, mob, etc. They are about the reward or the new area. Offer a quest with no reward or a flute or some garbage and see who lines up. Actually, that sounds like fun but it would be a grip of bored 5x40s.

It’s a catch-22 really. If drachma is simply handed out in even numbers to everyone that participates, you’ll see two to three people doing the lion’s share of the work and the rest will be grateful. If you see quests that start offering quest eq rewards, you’ll see people doing whatever they can to get their hands on it and the rest will whine relentlessly.

Maybe a high-quest, medium or low, few hard to get in game things (depending on the extent of the quest and participation) and a sprinkling of drachma for everyone.

See point 1.

Akasha to be honest I wasn’t asking Tox to cough it up or something. I was just hoping that it can be understood that regardless of what was said above my post and your reply that everyone has expectations even if they’re not questing. They join an eq group and know they’re getting a chance of an item to pop for them as their call. The only difference in a quest and any other group is that the expectations level rises. We “quest” in expectation of a good new area, but usually as far as being rewarded characters who’ve had the opportunity to be in the quest always feel they’re getting too small an award. You know if there was more than one piece of quest eq handed out there generally wouldn’t be as much “bickering” as I think Juggleblood referred to it as. The last quest I was in was Baraneth’s Cache some point at which the webpage became this format. I just don’t get why there is so much quest eq (Teron’s Nekode) for instance and people say it is rarely handed out. Since the last quest I was in I know of several nice items of real quest_low through quest_high eq that was handed out along with drachma and I haven’t been involved in a single one of those quests. I mostly never hear about them, which is why I ask about Tox’s plans on handing out items or if he’s going to just kill us and put his area in and gloat a while, or sing crappy music or.. worse.

We’ve had this conversation so many times, it’s funny to see it being discussed BEFORE the actual quest, rather than all the complaining that usually comes after a quest.

I’ve mentioned before that I totally support the drachma system. My advice would be to ban all new quest eq, and introduce those items as elite eq to the shops.

Quest eq invites resentment from other players because someone else has been rewarded (leader/tank) while you haven’t (mage/cleric). The discrepancy between rewarded / not rewarded is very large.

With drachma, you can a) reward everyone and b) choose the size of the bonus awards. If everyone gets 50 dr then noone will be complaining when the leader / MVP gets 60 dr.

All that is really beside the point. If you join a quest you shouldn’t expect ANY rewards. If you just want a reward, keep cycling your xp / eq or whatever. If you’re thinking about rewards before the quest, you’re missing the point.

Charles

Enjoy the quest boys and girls, I’ll be studying for finals and my CCNA.

sigh

Stepping into Dr. Phil’s shoes for a moment, quest endings/rewards are easy and simple. First, if drachma is to be given out, it has been handed out equally for group effort. Secondly, and more to the point, let’s say there 3 quest items to be handed out. Now instead of doing a popularity contest of group voting who should get what I recommend, instead, that leader OR Imm announces the item with stats (if not known) to be handed out. Now, in a group of 20+ players, some may and most probably all will vie for that quest item. The solution is that those interested in quest item random for item. In the case of a tie, the leftovers random again and so on and so forth until a clear winner for item #1 is determined. Repeat process for other items as well. I can almost hear it now.. well that’s not fair… Player X tanked the entire time, shocked twice, he really, really deserves it and hell, he’s a nice guy to boot… big friggin deal, he’s a tank, that’s his job. He is no more important that the person healing or the one stabbing. Some leaders have been fair in handing out quest gear but it can become a bitterfest, and usually does, when someone who contributed was completely left out of the loop.. all because he/she had lower levels.. not as affective heals/blasting etc etd. By allowing randoming to determine who gets what, it puts everyone on the same playing field.

Flame on!

you’re tanking the quest, big fella.

Nope not me.. I pretty much gave up tanking and rarely lead like I use to..I got tired of the griping.

Anyone got a report on what the quest was all about?

awesome thanks Tox :)

Judging by the lack of disgruntled posts, I’m guessing the rewards were drachma and/or rank? Or did everyone get their griping out in advance?

Just curious… someone post what happened!

Btw, I saw someone post the idea of banning all new quest eq… why don’t you just castrate us now and leave us with nekode envy forever? Nothing says preferential treatment like creating a two-tiered system based on when people started playing*, especially if this is your solution to the fact that fancy quest eq was obtained in a method many priceless thread hours were devoted to complaining about**! Just make people random, damn it, and let the sloth economy slog on (1000 chunks of kobold and 500 piles of dung for your fancy new helm!).

On another note, and perhaps this has been suggested before, has any coder given thought to “temp” quest eq? You get the item, it lasts three months (arbitrary), and then it poofs and becomes available for the next pot o’ gold. Visceral thrill a la Joe, and you get the consolation of knowing that “hey – maybe I’ll get it next time”. Plus, perhaps some imms might be more excited about conducting quests if they can have the pleasure of giving out fun rewards that might not encourage (as much) resentment***. Maybe tie lifetime to power of item, or even frequency of use (i.e. quest eq collecting dust fades faster). I know I’d be thrilled to have a super stabber or some extra +dam eq, even if it only lasted a day or two.

And one final thought – since leading is such a bitch, shouldn’t I get quest eq for leading SOOOOO many experience groups over the years****? :)

I have to go to work, so I’ll stop procrastinating through rambling. Flame on!

Patrick (Van/Crisi/Schroeder)

  • For clarification, I’m not denigrating the rewards of loyalty and long-term play, but I think that’s well handled in drachma eq, extremely painful forges, perfect stats, and big fancy houses as stands.

** For further clarification, I’m not bashing anyone who obtained quest eq previously. You lucky bastards.

*** Personally, I question whether Dave will ever lose enough bitterness to hand out quest eq again. That makes me sad. :(

**** This comment goes for all those other tireless leaders out there, who put up with a lot of asinine shit. Can I get an Amen!?

this, please

On yet another note. what the heck happened? No one has posted details of what new pops are there, if there level restricted/temp etc etc… Didn’t get to go as I don’t have a lymer so several had to miss out on the last part. Please post.

In short…

*There was a play off to lead the group, in which Zukt bet Sa

*We trotted around the globe looking for some eq on biggish mobs our quest mob “Squire Dorrin” lost

*Then we entered the new area and killed stuff on lyme, of which roamed some special nasty quest mobs. It’s not a notemp area.

*Sa died 20-30 times

*Most received 60 drachma… then a further 15, and 1 if you hit lucifier with us earlier.

I believe the ever outstanding Rynquald, and the knowledgeable Sheng received some -0.7 +5ma +5hp arm stuff for there above the call of duty efforts. The leaders were also rewarded in some way.

There are some prime druid legplates in the new area, which were given to Stryx… +10 mana shifted… which is kinda cool, cause I’ve always felt like a goon running around half naked… There is some forge in the new area as well.

The quest was fair, fun and long… and I doubt you will hear much whining about it, cause it was all well done.

I’m sure lis will have a map in a few days… if not already…

Special mentions.

*Fable for making sure everyone’s eudaemon was the first to die…

*Gumbi for leaving the group and getting splorked every five minutes, and attacking squire dorrin.. I didn’t like him much either…

*Ah for light comic relief every time squire dorrin lost something

*Brad for doing less :)~ than he normally does

we received 50 + 15 drachmas fyi

great quest, i loved dying :)

sa

You only received 50 drachma? We all got 60!

Just kidding, yeah, my bad. 50 it was… I think… :?

Oh btw, Zukt’s title is “Angelkiller” if your angel… at least he lived up to his name!

As promised, here’s the quest details.

Prequest:

The quest started an hour late due to some confusion about the meaning of EST. As everyone stood around 1w of shallah, some sneaky <Pirate> busted out a mass teleport stick and kicked off the festivities. After running around saving all of our drowning companions, Zukt led the group on a Lucifer hunt. We got him to pretty hurt in one run which consumed two full moon auras.

Lucifer safely put to rest, we returned to SS to await Tox.

As promised, Tox allowed everyone who wanted a chance to lead just that…

In a chaos arena to the death, Theca, Stormshadow, Sheng, Sa, and Zukt faced off in DoT.

Most everyone ran around like pansies while Zukt (wraithformed) swiftkicked them in the back. Finally, in the order listed above, everyone except Zukt died to elites.

We returned to SS, where Squire Dorrin approached us at the dwarven Scribe Shop. He said he needed help, and half a dozen groupies fell over themselves promising to do whatever he asked. (One of these days, the “evil” quest mob should approach the group first, really people!)

Squire Dorrin was missing some equipment, which he said was stolen by Demons.

Scattering across SS, the group searched high and low for the stolen equipment. (Shimbo?) found the first piece on the Marilith.

… Zukt gets some of Aromin’s equipment from the corpse of a Marilith.

Next clue: I do believe they took the equipment off to the east…’

… Zukt gets some of Galvin’s equipment from the corpse of Shiroka (finder?)

Next clue: Squire Dorrin says ‘somewhere on thordfallen’

       Lugnut says 'demons again?'

Squire Dorrin says 'I do believe ..'

… Nomic gets some of Benotaur’s equipment from the corpse of Hyperion (finder Rynquald?)

Next Clue: A Solar killed the demon and took it! (finder: Edd or Lis?)

… Seraph has been banished to the astral plane!

… You pick up some of Merik’s equipment.

Final Clue: Squire Dorrin says ‘I’m clueless, go ask my King.. he is wise’ (paraphrased!)

===============

King Lucius Degrance II says ‘hi Sheng!’

King Lucius DeGrance II says ‘It is good to see so many willing to help my squire in need’

Twink says ‘your squire is not really good is he’

Lugnut says ‘so what of this miss eq '

Ah says ‘squire is a bum.. you should hire me to take his place’

Ah says ‘I wouldnt lose your eq’

Eta says ‘We are eager to come to the assistance of you and your court, your Majesty.’

__ Shyla says (to Dorrin) ‘such silly people those people’

Gumbi says ‘yeah, apparently he got whupped and lost a bunch of stuff’

You say ‘we were told you were very wise, and could help us find the last piece of stolen equipment’

King Lucius DeGrance II says ‘I sent my 5 Knights to Lyme to find an artifact of unimaginable power’

Zukt says ‘Your squire was ambushed by foul demons.’

Weasel says ‘and…’

Assirian says ‘i love unimaginable power :)’

Lugnut says ‘and now their eq with demon eh’

King Lucius DeGrance II says ‘A great demon mage is there’

King Lucius DeGrance II says ‘stole the artifact from my father long ago’

You page the gods with ’tox, permission to sneak the group’s only 2x40 to lyme? :)’

(denied.. Kanae had to quit the quest)

King Lucius DeGrance II says ‘but there is one more piece of equipment needed for the knights’

King Lucius DeGrance II says ‘before you can go to Lyme’

King Lucius DeGrance II says ‘Hrm, I wrote it down.. let me see if I can find it’

King Lucius DeGrance II says ‘ah here it is’

King Lucius DeGrance II says ‘It’s on a wild island’

King Lucius DeGrance II says ‘filled with ancient beasts’

King Lucius DeGrance II says ‘I’m not sure where it is, but good luck’

===============

Zukt gets some of Tahgrin’s equipment from the corpse of Malign that’s on the ground. (finder Sheng… only seconds before Shimbo)

…. End Quest Part I

Part I of the quest was great fun, the most-cast spells being spirit watcher, refresh, and raise dead. Some questers were excellent and efficient at finding and checking mobs, others were still working on those skills and provided raise xp for team Cleric :)

…. Quest Part II

Squire Darrin returned to the Degrance outpost on Lyme, which he found under attack by bands of ogres

Rynquald quickly found the entrance to Mount ‘An Mystica through the Ebony Grove (notemp)

Squire Dorrin quests– ‘That demon mage, I’ve discovered his name.. Aarotar!’

Squire Dorrin quests– ‘He’s dispatched minions over Mount ‘An Mystica’

Weasel – ‘:: Tracks to Aarotar the Demon Mage lead northward.’

Squire Dorrin quests– ‘If you could destroy all the demons…’

New area info… a book on the ground at Squire Dorrin speaks of a powerful charm, forged by combining 4 artifacts (also forged)

The new area, Mount An Mystica, was crawling with ‘Band of Ogres’ and ‘Two Dozen Demons’ quest mobs. (We were told these were not normally part of the area.)

There’s lots of aggros on the way up the mountain, some of them very large…

An icy rock beast is dead! R.I.P.

You received 42926601 experience points.

(Solo xp)

At the top of the mountain, we slew Aarotar the Demon Mage (revenge for his earlier splorking of ferret-Ryn)

Aarotar the Demon Mage is dead! R.I.P.

You receive 10455497 experience points as your share.

Your blood freezes as you hear Aarotar the Demon Mage’s death cry.

Zukt gets gold coins from the corpse of Aarotar the Demon Mage that’s on the ground.

Zukt splits 1000000 coins. Your share is 41666 coins.

so many junkish cps from that area:)

im gonna not go to that area once i have my forge:)

Thanks for making the new area Brad. Congratz, I look forward to more of your stuff. Makes the mud fun to see new and interesting ideas flowing.

I read through this whole thread and wanted to comment a few items.

Why cant a quest just toss out tasty prizes for everyone involved at least 1 time a year, why all the fuss about holding back it seems. Logging on, getting cremated, having a fun social time that results in a fun prize is ok to have happen. No one would be offended by that. It used to happen.

Seems taboo to hand out good prizes now.

Otherwise use the drachma system to continue to award and reward. Say a 30 person group gets a 50dr melting token. And leader, tank, and maybe an MVP gets an additional 25dr or something like that. Then keep the drachma shops fun, new, and up to date at least once a year.

That would work great too.

Akashas last big quest was awesome. Lots of dr with all the mini’s and end quest if you participated in them all. Was exciting to log in.

Aaron ran a nice quest a few years ago, and let everyone pick an ingame item, nothing outrageous. That worked out really well too, no bitching and everyone got a comp towards a forge, reasonable needed item, hard spellbook etc. I picked an ivory torch, i still use it.

Fun Questing should be a part of the cycle of the mud. Its ok to hold Quests and give out prizes.

Thanks
