Newbie needs some class selection help

·3821 words·19 mins

Hey!

I recently made a character on the game, but was dismayed to find out that it wasn’t an optimal choice. I had picked mage/warrior/cleric/druid. By now I have somewhat of a basic grasp on the game and how to get started, etc.

I would like a character that could solo later on if I wanted to, but also a character that would be useful in groups too. I’m really only interested in creating one character and playing it all the time, so I want to get it right the first (or I guess in this case, second) time. :P

I’m a big fan of magic/casting in MUDs generally, so I guess I’d like to be a mage primary (or at least have mage somewhere in there). Are primary mages very useful in groups/solo situations? I don’t care if I have to kick it back to secondary or whatever, as long as I can cast some spells. :P

It doesn’t matter to me if a character is hard to start out with. I’m willing to put in the time and effort if it means the character will end up being good later on.

warrior/necro/mage/cleric seems a solid choice.

But depending on who responds, you’ll get at least 50 different suggestions :)

why don’t you take a look at some of the higher level characters with classos that might interest you and ask them about it what they like don’t like…what they can solo , how they do in groups. for instance ryquald is a mage druid warrior cleric who is a level 40 avatar. ask him what he thinks of his character..why he really likes it. most if not all people won’t mind answering questions for you. But what it all boils down to is what YOU like because it might seem like a strange classo to me but if you love it who cares :)

Shyla

Im old school.

I’m a Wa/Ma/Th/Cl

If/when I make a noobie, it will be a cl/th/ma/wa

I do fairly well as a warrior mage, and I know a cleric thief will rock.

Basicaly you figure out what you wanna do, read skill tree’s and help files,

and decide in which direction you want to take. Prime skills also can help

your decision.

This mud was built around the 4 standard classes, and thus those four class

type can do exceedingly well. The other four classes were added in recently,

and as such, the mud is still not prepared for necros and bards :)

lots of good advice before and I’m sure after this post, but heres my tuppence worth of wisdom:

classes fall into 2 categories, for want of better terms:

Blasters: Dr Ma Cl Ne

Tankers: Wa Mo Th Ba

in order to max your mana for casting the first 2 classes must be blasters, conversly to max your hp they must be tankers.

In order to group effectively you must have PROTECT skill that means at least one tanker in the mix.

Other essential/useful skills to consider:

Strength: put ma/cl in mix or buy orange potions

Sanctuary: very very useful, not so easy to get from potions and only available to Cl at lvl 17.

Fluidity: Stacks with Sanctuary and does a similar job only available to Dr.

Stone Skin: -3ac available to Ma and Cl, Bone armor is a Ne sort of equivalent.

Pets:

pets play a big part in soloing:

Supplication (cl): these pets are not always fight type pets, but notables are peri (lvl20) will heal you as you fight, eudaemon (lvl 40/33) does this better, xag/xeg are excellent fighters

Ne pets animate dead/summon undead/ jujus(ne prime only) all do huge damage, best fighting pets in the game.

Backstab: This is the fight opener that does the most damage in game and is only available to Th.

Aprt from these in my opinion most other stuff I can live without, although that said Dr shapeshifts can be enormously powerful for a single mob, but tend to not last long enough for a run.

As so much of the early game is all surrounded by the token hunt to get good stats, when choosing a classo you should also seriously consider your stato and what stats you can reasonably expect …

[quote:2oe8z2yp]Fluidity: Stacks with Sanctuary and does a similar job only available to Dr.[/quote:2oe8z2yp]

coconuts of soothing draught are cool… (fluidity spell).

[quote:2oe8z2yp]Stone Skin: -3ac available to Ma and Cl, Bone armor is a Ne sort of equivalent. [/quote:2oe8z2yp]

Iron skin for avatar, unsurpassed as far as I know.

[quote:2oe8z2yp]Sanctuary: very very useful, not so easy to get from potions and only available to Cl at lvl 17. [/quote:2oe8z2yp]

Basicaly, you do not have a choice, cleric must fall someplace in your class

order. There is no class that can mimic clerics. Refresh, sanc, stone

skin, lloyds beacon, dark cloak, raise, heals, bless, curse, gate, word of

recall. Too much to list that makes cleric in class order essential. If

nothing else, put cleric in 4th. Clerics rock.

[quote:2oe8z2yp]pets play a big part in soloing: [/quote:2oe8z2yp]

handy, but not essential. though the peri is handi even for a cleric quad.

Actualy, the list can be broken down into:

casters: ma/cl/dr/necro.

tank: warriors are only tanks.

thief: thieves are only thieves.

hybrid: monk (th/wa), bard (ma/wa/th)

But yeah, cleric is going someplace in class order.

Actually not every1 use Cleric in their class. I believe it’s Zukt that doesn’t

have Cleric but instead Necro. Necros has Wall of Bones (or something)

that is just like Sanc. However once u leave the room it goes bye bye.

At tard you can get a Golem that does the same thing and follows you. But

again this golem can only go like 5 rooms and then poof gone. Clerics

sancs are the best because they can last from 3-7 minutes.

What I’m not entirely sure about is what difference it makes it makes depending on where you put the class. Say, what’s the difference between 2nd Cleric and 4th Cleric, besides what you can supplicate?

What about this: Mage/Cleric/Necro/Druid

Is that any good at all? Or should I have them in a different order.

Or should I have warrior in there somewhere? Or Bard instead of Necro or Druid? Would a Mage/Cleric be viable for both healing or blasting depending on the group?

Sorry for the dumb questions, but I really want to get this right.

Well, spellbonus caps are in a descending order, meaning, prime mages can do more damage with spells than 2nd mages, prime cleric healing is more powerful than 2nd clerics, etc, and this descends from 1st to 4th.

Necro primes get a JuJu, which is a nice follower that other positioned necros dont get.

A pure caster isnt going to have much solo power at all until avatar level (f any until then).

A pure tank (wa/mo/ba/th) isnt going to be much at all without a group.

It’s all trial and error…

ma/cl/ne/dr doesn’t get protect, which is a very useful thing to have in groups. People have managed without it, but it’s not a popular choice. The other four classes all get it, so if you have any one of those you will be ok as far as that goes.

If you want to play a mage i suggest mage/cleric/warrior/necro, you will have some nice soloing abilities there and useful to a group. Suggesting warrior as the fighter for a mage prime, since mirrors (or atleast i belive) you can’t use any initiating attacks such as backstab or grip. Druids only good use imho are for regen or killing pthieves in safe rooms.

quad druid is kind of useless, you only get +7mr points and, umm, rarely used shapeshifts…

Thanks for all the help and suggestions, people.

This ^^ is the kind of thing I was waiting for. I might actually go ahead and make a M/C/W/N, unless anyone thinks its a bad idea.

I just don’t want to play for 3 months and then end up going “Gee, I wish I took bard instead of necro” or something like that. You know what I mean. :P

I don’t have enough time to make a bunch of different characters. I just want to make one good character that will last me a while.

This is the type thing we were saying:

m/c/w/n is good

but

m/c/b/n is also good, y?

Bards get almost as much AC eq as warriors, nice hp, and mana, plus they have songs that can help in soloing.

Every classo can get -11 ac.

BUT a M/C/Monk/N would also help out alot. With Monk you can Grip,

Passage, Protect, and Flurry to get an extra attack.

There is not perfect char, it all depends on how u play. You have to do

a lot of trial and error to find the BEST choice of Chars for YOU and only YOU!

I for one have made about 7-8 chars and most of them have reached 3x40.

Im pretty sure i said this but clearly leaf overlooked it, you can’t grip with mirrors, and mirrors are a big part of being a mage.

Im pretty sure i said this but clearly leaf overlooked it, you can’t grip with mirrors, and mirrors are a big part of being a mage.[/quote:2wspii0e]

Fine you can’t grip, but Counter Attack is a GREAT skill that a Mage would

need without a Warrior skill to Parry.

Fair enough, and Akasha is right. Every classo has it ups and downs, once you learn to play the classo and the ins/outs of the game you will find tricks to doing almost anything.

The problem with the 4 new classes is they are only good good with their

prime abilities. Everything is about sacrifices. Give this for that, tit for tat.

All about what ya wanna do though.

True That True That!!!

I would suggest because u LOVE to be a caster … Mage/Cler/War/xx

4th class is tricky.

Necro = No as a Mage Prime ur not going to order ur summons to attack

something. There is a Summon Lag that would most likey kill u before u

can blast.

Bard = Maybe u get hp,ma,mv, and ur songs can help groups.

Thief = No, because u would only get hp, mv and can’t stab with mirrors.

Only Pos would be Stab, ability to see inventories, and some of the skills

that a thief would get.

Druid = Maybe, u would get ma, and very small mana regen when outside.

Only Pos would be the spells for Resists and Fluidy, and u could shift.

Sooo the 4th can either be Bard or Druid.

Ahhhhh, this is so confusing.

No offense Diazz buy you can say that about every class.

Centinex your not going to get a stone cold answer, because there is no right answer.

Yes you can say this about every class, how ever, with the older classes, you

give up more then you gain.

And Yeah – there is no right answer.

there is no spoon!

I know; I’m not looking for the “best” character, because I know there isn’t one. I just want a mage/spellcaster character that will be pretty good in groups and ok to solo some areas if I really wanted to.

So yeah, I guess I’m just going to have to pick something and roll with it.

Mage/ Cleric/ (Monk/warrior)/ (Necro/Bard)

I guess I’ll come up with something. :P

Anyway, I REALLY appreciate all the input from you guys/girls. It’s definately given me a lot of insight on the game.

A few thoughts:

Ma/Dr/Wa/Cl would be a pretty good soloer at higher lvls. Groups usually need blasters as well. Healing becomes a problem until you reach Cl 36(?) But if you’re constantly running, that shouldn’t take too long. Your major advantage will probably be your regen rates (outdoor).

Ma/Cl/Wa/? would be a pretty good soloer at higher lvls. Groups need blasters and healers, and this classo can be both, regen becomes a minor problem though. Your major advantage will probably be your ‘pet rabbit.’ A eudamon goes a looooong way to helping solo.

Maybe it’s just me, but I don’t see much use of War in 3rd compare to Monk.

Counter Attack, and Passage are great skills for Monks …

Use Mirrors, Counter Attack, Passage, walk in Curse/Damn flee. Passage

come in blast, flee, passage come in blast flee … rinse and repeat.

MY Suggestion and this is only me. Mage/Cleric/Monk/Bard

Here are the mage classos that come to mind

Ma Dr Cl Mo - high outdoor mr and resting hpr, aegis fluidity dmg reduction, can run as mage with mirrors or use deathgrip to save mana.

Ma Dr Cl Ba - high outdoor mr, aegis fluidity, bard songs for grouping, forced to play mage style with no leading attack.

Ma Ne Cl Ba - Big followers, aegis wraithform, bard songs for followers and grouping, again forced into mage style.

Ma Ne Cl Mo - Big followers, aegis wraithform, mage style or deathgrip

I feel the power of a mage is in spellcasting, this makes warrior a bad choice for me. Bards have just as much ac gear, more mana, can sing songs, see inventorys, sneak and hide. Monks get deathgrip/deathtouch, counterattack, presage and focus which I think outdo the warrior skills. If you want to spend the time messing with corpses and doing alot of prep work necro is the way to go. Necro seems to be more beneficial to solo type players (spectral shield not included), whereas the druid classo is more of a support/group powerhouse. If you want to hop in and go Ma Dr packs alot of mana and the mr to keep you casting all day strong.

Mike

Will, will, will…

That’s PRESAGE, don’t confuse the newbie. :P

It’s a good combo, but will a mage with mirrors need presage?

The classo I’d suggest is Ma/Dr/Cl/Ba. I’d say why, but I’m pissed because Randy Johnson seems to be melting down again. …grrrrr.

Mark, Mark, Mark … the guy is like +50 yrs old give him a break

But it all depends on how u want to solo. =)

So anyway, I made a mage/druid/cleric/monk and a mage/cleric/monk/bard just to try em out for a bit.

Is there problems getting equipment without bard or warrior in your classo? It seems like everything I find needs either of those as a requirement.

Most things that have good armor class are going to be warrior/bard/monk/thief restricted. There are items at higher levels that casters can wear to boost their armorclass, but easrly on, you’re going to be a strict grouper till you can wear it.

[quote:2p3fi6bp]No offense Diazz buy you can say that about every class.

I’m a glass half full kinda guy. Doesn’t that mean that there is no wrong answer?

What this probably comes down to is there are many acceptable class orders and a few clunkers (clinkers?). And I mean specifically a few specific orderings of class selection not combinations of class seleecions (permutations instead of combinations).

There are 56 permutations and I doubt anyone has given them a try to 3x40 to understand how well they perform. In absence of that, I’d say go with whatever style fits you and the fun will come.

This mud is still changing (sometimes subtly, sometimes not) and perhaps it will hit the sweet spot of your class ordering for a while or perhaps it will drift away from it. In either case, it will likely swing back and forth as it has for the past 9+ years of this version of Sloth.

Do or do not. There is no try.

Clink

you said (clinker)

I think I’m going to stick with the M/D/C/O. Seems pretty fun to me so far.

Thanks for the help. :)

Best of luck with ur new char, and have fun!

One more question…

Str: 12 / 0, Int: 14, Wis: 14, Dex: 13, Con: 11

I’m guessing that is pretty bad. Should I be aiming for 17-18 in Int/Wis?

EDIT: Actually, for some reason my stats are now:

Str: 14 / 0, Int: 17, Wis: 16, Dex: 14, Con: 14

What gives? I didn’t use a token…

Your stats can change on the EQ u wear. So more then likey u have some

eq on u that changed ur stats.

Str: 14 / 0, Int: 17, Wis: 16, Dex: 14, Con: 14 even with eq is pretty low.

I believe u should aim for at least 18int as a Mage.

Str: xx / 0, Int: 18, Wis: 17, Dex: 16, Con: xx

The xx are ur lowest stats and doesn’t much matter as a caster.

would swap druid 4th choice for bard… u get prot skill for groups and songs kick ass.. plus there be a nifty use of bard I won’t mention here…

oh.. and don’t level past 20 unless your mostly happy with your stat roll.. people will no doubt argue level up and have fun… I’d commect stay below… have fun and get your perm stats.. it’ll save alot of teeth wrenching later on..

finally, no matter what an Imm tells you…there is no sex in the champagne room

Well, I’m definately not starting over again… Anyway, I had monk 4th, not druid, don’t know if you knew that or just made a typo.

And yeah, I plan on staying below 20 and rolling my stats for as long as it takes to get a decent roll.

What’s the best classo for a Cleric prime specialist - my intention is not to solo it at all - it’ll be pretty much a pure group healer / raiser, so I really want to go for max mana, mana regen, and +heal and whatever else would help this kind of character.

I have Xopek as old school Cl, Ma, Wa, Th but am considering getting him wiped and restarting him.. also wonder if I start a new char with same name, can the new char wear the drachma eq from the old char of the same name… if not, then I’ll probably let the little bugger stagnate.

Thats simple Weasel: Cl/Dr/xx/Bard

xx = Mage or Necro

I would lean on Mage more, because they give more mana then Necros as

3rd or so I believe. Also this will give u some ability to blast.

Druid 2nd will help with the fast mr, and Bard 4th helps with Protect, 2x

attack, trip and other skills. Also as a bard u can rina for a raise :)

Also I would believe deleteing an old char with drachma eq wouldn’t help

on a newbie with the same name.

Got another question, doesn’t really fit here but I didn’t see the point of making a new thread.

At what point does a blaster start really helping a group?

Say I’m in a group of 5 people, me being a blaster and the other 4 being warriors (level 15-20ish). Say we’re in a battle that lasts 10 rounds, and I’m throwing a colour spray (my best 1-target spell so far) every round. Am I really even doing close to comparable damage to one of the warriors, or do I need to level and get better spells? Just asking because I’ve been grouping a bit lately, and I kinda end up feeling like I’m just leeching, even though I’m blowing my entire MP on colour sprays on a tough mob. It’s hard to tell how much damage your spell is doing.

1.

Good luck to you Centinex, best of luck with the stat rolls, there are lots of views on what are good stats, personally I go with add all stats 60+ = ok 70+ = good 80+ = keepers rough rule but works mostly.

2.

As far as a good blaster in a group goes I think any char that can add blinds in before assisting is a worthwhile and valuable member of a group and not in any sense leeching.

However, to answer your question, Daisy is a 4x20 old classo perm valk char Ma Wa Cl Th …

With good eq she runs in -8ac with about the best non dr weapon she can wield, even with kick dam and frenzy, her fireballs are powerful enough to make a mockery of the weapon damage she can do.

Fireball is the first really useful blasting spell, but all the others still count.

3.

Perm Grouper Cl healo char

my 2 cents worth:

Cl/Dr(ma regen)/Ne(wall and infuse)/Ba(rina and protect)

The only change to this that would make sense to me would be swap cl and dr to get even better ma regen, also dr shift damage if you ever find yourself not needed for heals.

Curse first and then blind. Once it’s blind just attack it, don’t even worry to

much about colour spray. Just save ur mana for cursing and blinding.

Stats always going to be hard to get but +80 is keeper for a caster. More

Warriors need 18/+60 and usually a high dex or con. Which all in all is hard

to get. As a caster u mostly look at Int, Wis, and Dex (for ur class order).

I don’t see a reason for Necro instead of Mage. As a Necro u can wall …

Cleric u can Sanc. Necro u can soul … Cleric u can heal massive with +heal

eq. Spec Shield & Wraith might be the only good thing. However Cleric covers

Spec Shield with Spell shield and Wraith is the only thing that would give an

advantage. However again … Mage u can blast and sometimes it’s better

to blast those ether or thick mobs then as a Necro :)

Thanks for the advice.. will probably go for Cl/Dr/Ma/Bard ..although having time to start up and play a new char is my problem now :/

Come on Weasel just have some1 mort u for like 1hr and u will be able to solo.

:) new charname is Medico - just rented tho

Well i’m at work so i can’t mort for yea anyways.

Workin 9-5 sucks and a 3hr (combined) commuit doesn’t help either.
