New Area's

Krok wrote this…

I think the playerbase is dropping, cause the old players just can’t find a new thing to do. New skills and spells add a bit of fun, but when you finally get the damn book after 10+hours of perm cycling on all of the continents.. you are a bit discouraged, actually. We can solo stuff which was a dream for us in the childhood. We can do almost everything pretty well, but we have noooo new stuff to do. No new areas, no new forges etc.

If I were an imm I’d be a little alarmed by this. Life is full of cycles, and eventually the more experienced players and imms will leave sloth. Is it not time that some of the younger players step up and improve sloth?

What I am saying, as the respected player base drops, there needs to be injection of fresh talent and ideas from younger players - under the watchful eye of older players, so that sloth can continue further into the future.

If say 3x40 players could write area’s and have them approved by imms without becoming imms this could really freshen things up. Maybe a few drachma could be offered for a good area to be put into the game. I think it is idea’s like this that could secure a more relevant future for sloth?

I’d like to see a new continent… maybe restricted to 2x40 or less… or an entire continent with area’s all themed together. The idea’s are boundless… and I am sure I will post more - as will others.

Most people that play sloth are fairly good with computers. I for one am a programmer and would consider writing an area writer which people could write area’s in for approval. I could make it output an area file in sloth syntax if so required. It also gives a bit more of a sense of ownership to players… and with that sloth will build and increase.

Very nicely said Jezer. I would have to agree. I for one would truly enjoy putting together an area and perhaps a few quests for spellbooks even. I am sure there are others out there that would enjoy it as well. Perhaps the creators can bring this about and we can help add to the game that we have become addicted to.

Wasn’t there some mention not long ago of an offer something to do with learning slothcode etc? Did anyone email Splork or whoever about it at the time? If not, then really we don’t have a leg to stand on, because as I recall, the opportunity to learn was there… I think.

Considering how many players we have online at any given time, there’s a lot of areas out there not being touched.. although some areas are hellish to get a CR from due to entrance requirements, which is kinda self-defeating.

I think it was Enea or maybe Clink that once asked something like… If you were allowed to create areas without being an imm would you do it? A lot of people including myself said yes.

I don’t really want to be an imm… but I’d like to work with them. (I’m dodging responsibility) Thats why I offer to build an area builder of such that doesn’t require you to be an imm to make areas. Obviously they would need approval and testing by imms. I’d be happy to create an open source area builder for windows platform for sloth. I don’t want to own this idea, I want others to get onboard, I’m just offering to help.

Maybe at a later date, a testing system could be built into the area builder to test things a bit. A rough “near enough is close enough” combat engine. I also understand it maybe difficult to even make areas without MUDL. I am hoping splork or kjartan will add some thoughts to this post.

Its mostly just good intentions at the moment.

To answer weasel a little more directly… I agree, but when you were a 20+ prime noob hanging out on BH, where did you get your xp? I know all my characters have nearly gained probably over 80% of there xp in about 6 areas…

Catacombs, Castle, Matterhorn, Kuo-toans, Shadow Keep, Mage Tower Ruins.

Some complete area’s are only ever run because of as little as 1 or 2 items of eq. There are a lot of areas, a lot of them are poor imho. I think more “quality” not “quantity” area’s need to be built.

What I think would work best if the imms held a competition to design an area which they think needs to be built, and then the best design wins.

IE, Create a 2x40 orientated area, must have blah blah blah… best entry receives 25 drachma or a weekly

Good ideas.

We run the areas that offer the fattest xp or coinage generally. For example, an invisible stalker is easy, plentiful, choppy mob thats worth 780k-1.2 mil solo, whereas the berserker in nearby AH north is a nasty kick-your-butt aggro thats worth 150k. Hmmm.. decisions, decisions.

Yup..

If there is enough interest, sometime in the near future I will open up a test port for potentional Immortals to log in and play around with stuff like our OLC and MUDL. If you have some cool and innovative ideas for mudl and could build it yourself, I could possibly be persuaded to allow you to build it on a test port and I could add it to the game for you.

Please let me know if something like this would be of interest. Frito and Isiel are our newest Immortals but we would like a couple more builders to continue flushing out our world.

Enjoy,

I’m definitely going to get in on this offer and learn mudl, but I wanted to get my triple 40, so I’ve been muddin instead of writing my submission.

It does seem like the muds in a slump and it’s got a negative feedback kind of effect. You log in and theres no one on…so you log off, which causes the next guy to do the same. One good quest would probably cure us. Is Enea hosting a quest this weekend?

are you phawking out of your mind? like hell i’ll give anyone coins for doing stuff for the mud. you should be doing it anyway.. you want to bring more life to Sloth? then get off your damn lazy asses and do something.. i’ve been around for almost 10 years, i have brought tons of people to sloth, a lot have stayed… i have tested areas/mobs for imms, been smited for fun. had quests for players to hunt me. and assisted in ideas for descripts, mobs, and items.. not to mention my stupid mini quests and token trivia i like to do.. so stfu and help out rather then point a finger for someone else to get an idea..

#1 invite people to try it

#2 lead more, encourage others to get active.

#3 if you have friends that dont play anymore, lie to them to get them back.

#4 sumbit legit ideas to Kj & Splork rather then grouptelling how things should be.

#5 STFU unless you actually have something useful to say.

#6 rinse and repeat….. learn it, live it, love it

PS. juggle if i’m going to offer 15mil for something simple… then i will offer it to someone that pkills you

I wouldn’t say sloth is in a slump at all - there’s a huge amount of new skills and spells that have been introduced recently thanks to the busy coders. Maybe people are getting tired of cycling mobs lately to learn all the new spells and skills, which perhaps makes it feel like a slump..

sloth isnt the one in the slump. its the playerbase itself, we are the life blood of the game, we impact the changes, and inspire the trouble the Imms go through to improve things…

You have a small group of mid-sized chars trying, learning and playing. There is a large group of noobs that expect everything to be given too them beacuse they said so, most dont even try. And last, a large group of long-time players that are sick of the schyt the noobs are doing, and getting bored of pinching runs to cycle the new skills.

The Imms & staff are always working hard to make new things to keep our intrest. But the gaps are widening.. when a new spellbook is loaded ingame.. you have 100+ other avs all trying to get it at the same time.. and the game appears to get bottle necked.

If some of us pull a little at the top, and run questy things.. hand out eq, tokens like i do for dumb stuff, it gives the little guys & mid-sized something to do while the Imms can concentrate on important upgrades and such, without being harped on.

it doesnt take much to do. the last token trivia i ran lasted 2.5 hours and i handed out 35 hexs/octs and various vault clutter as prizes for random trivia questions, and bringing me strange items. I had a blast, and everyone that particpated, approx 25 people, newb thru av seemed to have a good time as well..

..no more ‘bring me the head of a weasel’ please..

scoffs fine…. Mr. Big Barrel of no fun…..

  1. WTF? STFUFAH!

  2. When I’m pissed I like to number my points!

  3. I am a butt pirate!

  4. I have fantasizes of putting weasel up my rear.

  5. If you ever misquote me again I’ll rip off your head and potty down your throat![/quote:q1tqlhor]

Garsh Auto…

amusing..

i’ll give you 1 point for the attempt, but -1000 for lack of style.

Krok will be running a bra burning ceremony to rally the female mudders into breathing new life to the mud. I think we should all be there to support her efforts. Idol Square 8pm CST. Autolycos and I will be doing free idol dives for your amusement.

Seriously though, just vote. That’s all you need to do to keep fresh people and ideas coming in. Some of them will certainly suck donkey nuts but most of them will not. If you haven’t noticed, the vast majority of players logged on have been 2x40 and better. Sometimes, it’s like 60-70% avatars. That’s really not a healthy ratio for the game.

One thing I’ve noticed more recently is that sloth seems to be extremely anti-social these days. I know I’m not one to talk, I’m almost never paying attention when I’m on, but I can’t remember the last time I saw any sort of discussion on gossip that wasn’t directly related to the game. I just don’t think it has the “friendly” atmosphere it used to.

when every third thing on gossip is some newbie begging for sbs, I’d rather imagine most people just have public channels turned off (I know I have for months now…)

Plenty OOC going on in private chans/gtells :)

Gossip works like this, and is why i dont use it.

Following occured about 1 year ago.

Blackmore Gossips: “Anyone need a hellstrike book”

Mosaix Gossips: " I do"

Blackmore Tells you “Go pop it yourself”

Blackmore Gossips: “Anyone need a hellstrike book”

Pretty useless channel. Pretty mean, and damn sure rude. I can guarantee Ive enjoyed watching you corpse Dean cause of no raisers available. Yet if your attitude was better Id have gone overboard to help you.

The main reason im not playing, and frankly not sure im coming back is the social interraction. Got tired of getting flamed and stepped on. Socially the mud took a serious dump for me long ago.

Pthiefs will be pthiefs. If you dont have junk in your inv, they cant steal it from you. Id rather catch flak for not changing into raise eq, then watch my eq go poof when im changing in the outdoors.

Though Id like to give big thanks to Blastem, Nab, Guinex and Autolycos.

Thanks for making mud fun, and taking the time to hook a cleric up.

Enjoy. See you when I see you.

Posting that you’re still holding a grudge from a year ago over one gossip says something about you. I’m not sure what, but it’s certainly not positive in my mind.

I help those that need help. If an avatar can’t be bothered to pop a book themselves, or even occasionally locate to see if one’s laying around, I’m not going to help them. I make an effort to give things to people who may not be able to get them themselves. I’ll frequently look at players who are about the right level to see what eq they’re wearing. If they’re obviously well equipped, then they can get what they either have friends who will give them stuff, or they can get it themselves. If they have low level equipment, then I’m happy to help out. If you can’t respect that, that’s too bad. If you think an avatar should be given some newbie book over a true newbie, I’m sorry you feel that way.

I was hungry the other day and you didn’t even rellocate and cast create food for me…

Heh, on a more serious note…

I have heard people comment about mosiax being an “on the ball” cleric in group, and I know Taliesin enough to know he’s not the grudge type… I think… So kiss and makeup… man-hug… whatever…

And he’s a tip from a n00b that pops his own hellstrike SB’s!!!

It says that i think you act like an disgruntled ass.

A year ago or now makes no difference in my opinion. I wrote it to serve as the best example in my direction of how you carry yourself. As your first posting in this thread caused a recation for me to toss out my inital post.

Your self-rightious postings get on my nerves.

Just dont like the way you act on the mud. Your behavior indeed says a lot about your gameplay and character interaction. Most of the time I see you on gossip, your schooling someone on what they did wrong. How much fun can that be especially to a new player? Why would they even want to stick around and join sloth?

Perhaps you take joy in offering and yanking away books/eq/help when your mood strikes you to do so. Possibly retaliation for a real life problem or issue someone dished at you. Then taking comfort in throwing it back on a mudder.

Dont offer things if you have set criteria for handing them out. Especially over gossip. Its simply stupid.

I eventually poped my own book, spider ate a couple winds and died several cycles over. Was simply not a critical book at the time for me to go out and pop. By asking for the book on gossip, even at my levels, was trying to save time. I have never had the time to sit on the mud and hog pops all day long while I work, etc.

I think ive given a fair share of junk out, expecially on valk to newbs. I have no doubt most of those noobes dont need the help as they are not newbs. However it goes out regardless. Everyone likes to get ahead, and make their chars a little more complete.

Shyla is very generous, and you are very stipulated. Takes all kinds I suppose. Though the Shyla’s of sloth will for instance help build the playerbase. I have faith you will continue to not.

From my bird’s eye view strut… Poor lil Jezer whines about boredoom and so on…

Jezer! You still ARENT even 4x40! Now be a good boy, shut teh chatter and lead teh Chop, but first map all chop-areas YOURSELF, then chop your ass out at least to 4x40-20, trust me - being Avatar IS interesting. Here, now you have teh goal :) Good luck etc

cackle!

Yasik! wasn’t concerned about myself and boredom… I’ve getting a n00b to avatar atm. Jezer is retiring due to a back complaint (He has no spine for battle after gripping  ) Nah, thief 3rd is just too overpowered… I wanted more of a challenge :p

last player ecko

Honestly yasik, read a post before replying… remember how you toasted me about the dark guardian in the coliseum? Aren’t you still  from that? Akasha fixed the bug the next day.

Mosaix you suck

Come on the mob is almost splork! Pops normally better than 1/4. 500k xp [/quote:24ybngqt]

He’s also nostab. Which for a splork mob makes him kinda rough. Easy if you have monk in classo, or are a winding mage. I had a 2x40 old classo that had quite a problem with him because I have mage 4th.

There’s a lot of areas that aren’t run. I’ve tried to learn a few of them, but I’ve discovered that I have multiple issues when I try to do much of anything on sloth. This is my normal though process:

  1. I could cycle spellbooks.

  2. I really should cycle eq.

  3. If I cycle eq, I should run the area enough for others to get their pops.

  4. Running the same area 20x is kinda boring.

  5. Running xp is easy.

  6. If I level enough, I’ll get iron skin and I won’t need eq.

  7. If the mud stays up a while, I can probably find the books I need lying around.

  8. Getting an xp group together is pretty easy.

  9. I’ll just run xp….

Which usually results in me needing more eq and spellbooks, and coins… I always seem to need coins….

coins? coins? *cackle

Yes coins. Until I pop enough vguards to outfit all my clanies, I won’t have an extra one for you, Weasel and Qa to fight over. However, after that I figure I’ll have enough for quite some time.

bravo! thats the spirit!

i’ll be more then happy to buy them off you. it will look quite a fetching addition to my hand crafted weasel fur cloak, and staff made from the bones of a washed up cleric

Just dont like the way you act on the mud.[/quote:1l1a931d]

Ok, you don’t like me. It happens. Others do. I’m sure the same could be said about you and everyone else in this world. I’m not sure why you would want to point that out now, especially in a thread about ways to improve the size of the player base. I guarantee I’m not the cause of the decline in the population on sloth, I haven’t even been on in the past 3 months long enough for any newbie to get an opinion of me. Do you have any other ideas?

Dont offer things if you have set criteria for handing them out. Especially over gossip. Its simply stupid.[/quote:1l1a931d]

If I’m currently holding it and I’m looking for someone to give it to, I’ll set any criteria I want, and my criteria is nearly always based on giving things first to the person with the most need that I can find. Gossip is the fastest way to find someone to give things to.

I know this post is an excellent example of my “self righteous” attitude. I’d rather be self-righteous than to say it’s stupid to use gossip if you’re going to limit your help to those that actually need help. Is it self righteous to say I frequently turn down books from Shyla, knowing I’m prefectly capable of popping it myself, and there’s almost always others with greater need? I’ve never really formed an opinion of you, I wasn’t aware you disliked me - but if you think you have the only opinion on how items should be given away on gossip, and all other ways are stupid, then no, we wouldn’t get along.

He’s also nostab. Which for a splork mob makes him kinda rough. Easy if you have monk in classo, or are a winding mage. I had a 2x40 old classo that had quite a problem with him because I have mage 4th.

[/quote:3i8xdo59]

If you are a winding mage, you don’t really need the spell, but yeah, without grip or wind, that’s one of nastier books to get for the level of the book. There’s quite a difference in having enough levels to read the book and having the ability to kill the spiders.

..it will look quite a fetching addition to my hand crafted weasel fur cloak..[/quote:13n5mext]

It’s nearly moulting season.. I guess I could sell you some of my sheddings.. it’ll only cost you a set of v.guards.
