High levelers farming newbie areas

·4042 words·20 mins

Im a little frustrated right now. We make some nice changes on the player’s behalf, just to find out some players are probably going to ruin it for everyone.

It appears that several high level players are farming the lowbie areas for tri tokens. Why on earth, I do not know since they can not give you great stats or even really good stats.

If these high level players can not leave these areas alone we will be forced to return tri tokens to under level 20 to prevent these players from killing mobs that newbies need, especially now with this restart. Tri tokens were meant to give a player playable stats, maybe even keepers, until they can search for hexes. They were also meant to be used as an emergency token- if you rolled something bad with your hex, roll the tri and get playable stats again.

Enjoy,

Splork

I think they’re running them for gold. Gold is very hard to run right now for any type of low level. My suggestion would be to make some low level gold mobs or give treasures to mid leveled mobs that you can sell for little more than tri tokens.

-tox

Nods, more random treasures like emeralds, rubies and such on midlevel mobs could help to fix it.

Vixn

I agree with Tox about the gold. Make the gold value of a tri-token 0 or some low amount like 100 coins. Right now they are about 20k each time you sell one.

Second if the few bad eggs keep farming tokens after the gold value is changed, then id say make the farmers lives hell. And also return the token to under level 20.

Good luck, it will be fun to play this summer again. Good changes.

Don’t just address the newbie farming problem with a band aid by making tokens worthless. Address the root of the problem… Mobs aren’t giving enough gold. Groups are useless coins.

Gold has been nerfed, and it’s going to be taken from animal mobs… the game is slower and harder than the previous sloth, we can’t really sell or cycle eq for sale like we used to be able too, as we all are small and everyone needs what is popped these days. Item values don’t generally reflect the price they are worth at auction, except a small subset of item which include tokens, hence their current value.

I’ve seen shops with 9 tokens for sale on most continents, it’s a gold problem, not a token problem.

changing the tokens is NOT the solution….once again we are talking about punishing the whole mud for something some people are doing…they still get what they want and then it is imposed on the rest of us. It doesn’t set the right kind of precedent. If there is abuse going on stop the abuse at the source. Trust me if there is a problem the people on the mud will let you know who is the problem. please stop changing things because we have jerks that are abusing it. abuse the jerks.

Some things have to fall on the players to patrol, this is one of them. We do not have the time or personal to patrol this situation.

Mosaix had the exact response that I wanted to hear.

We are not removing gold from all animals and any gold that we have removed from mobs have been placed elsewhere ingame.

Enjoy,

Splork

I’ve been selling any tokens that pop cause I think I have good stats now and I ended up suffering before the wipe because I played the token game and wound up not being able to carry anything.

I agree with Shyla, dont punish the whole for what some are doing, go after the abusers and the problem will be fixed.

Single sided die can now be used by any level player, they are identical to tri tokens. What I mean by this is, they use the same stat roller.

I have added this die to more random pop lists.

If I continue to see high level players farming lowbie areas for tri tokens, I am going to return the tri token to under 20 and the single sided die will be the emergency token for higher level players.

I am hoping I will not have to do this but in case I do, the single sided die is a nice and FAIR replacement.

Splork

why not make the animal mobs drop vendor trash? i.e. use the guts slots when building the mobs to make stuff like hides and intestines and a couple other items that are useless for anything but selling for cash. i.e. a lowbie animal mob could have hides and bones and intestines to sell for 1 - 5 coins, and higher level mob guts could potentially have higher values. just a thought. flame on.

Just a simple question.. splork me if you like :P

I tend to hit a low level area like kobolds for the potions it pops.. With low ac and low strength and little coin..buying bone armor, resist webs and refresh potions at shops is costly.. I do tend to bow to the little guys already in the area and come back when its free. So am I to be punished for using these potions? Am I to be considered farming a newbie area?

As I see it.. Changes where made that have been improvements..better group xp for little characters. Change in how much xp you get for hitting the same mob repeatedly..These things point us in a direction for cooperation as a group. To encourage us to explore more areas. By nature we are gathering what we know where we know we can.

Take the time to check and see if anyone is in the area. Offer to run a group with the little guys and split the rewards of selling items. Yes it can be a challenge to keep them alive, but 2 things can and will happen. They will learn more of the skills a group requires.. Man up …man back..when its safe to bash the mob and not get your casters attacked.. The xp they gain may be small in comparison to their one kill but if you multiply what they get with the number of kills you do in the same time you will see they are gaining more in the group. And you may get a new perspective on sloth as a whole.

Your complaints about limited gold are falling on deaf ears.

Now, I didn’t play much yesterday, but I did hit a handful of mobs. This afternoon, [b:djg3keua]every[/b:djg3keua] mob in my kill list has roughly 18% less gold.

It’s too early to tell if gold is atrophied like xp (unlikely), or if someone just has a trigger to nerf whatever Magi is cycling :)

The admin will tell you that they don’t remove gold, they just ‘move it around’… to mobs that are never hit, and won’t ever be hit because they aren’t worth hitting (just a guess). In my mind, gold that no one will ever get is the same thing as no gold.

If the struggle to get enough gold to level is your idea of fun, then Slothmud IV is definately the place to be. Apparently it’s a major selling point of the new version.

We all know that gold is very valuable in the beginning of the game, when we are all low levels.

The admin will know if we have done our job correctly if it maintains its value in a year from now, in five years from now.

Looking at your stats Magi, you are not struggling to gather gold to level. Matter of fact, looking at both single 40 players, neither of you are struggling to find the gold to level. Gold becomes easier as you level.

As an admin, Sloth needs to make sure that the gold ingame does not get out of hand and this process started two weeks ago with the restart and continues today, tomorrow, and in ten years…

Call it a nerf, call it whatever you want to be honest. The amount of gold that is ingame for higher level mobs is obnoxious and yes, it has been reduced. However, It has not been reduced for lower level mobs because we are quite aware of the fact that it is difficult to gather gold when you are starting out.

I think Splork just likes to double post.

I think Splork just likes to double post.

I was being nosy and observing the kobold incident.

A level 23/14 thief was stabbing kobolds for fun or potions or for whatever reason he wanted to stab kobolds.

Someone started making a big deal over it, because their wife wanted to kill kobolds, and felt that level 23 is too high to be killing kobolds.

Well, who’s to say that 23/14 is too high to kill kobolds? It’s awfully self righteous. The poor sap that was killing the kobolds never even figured out the name of the noob who he was supposedly stealing kills from. This is because the individual making the stink refused to speak to them. I observed this person trying to figure out what the big deal was and try to make amends for whatever he had done wrong. Instead, the people involved preferred to whine on gossip, ignoring his tells, and making a considerable mountain out of what was a small molehill.

This same vile exploiter who was stealing kobolds from poor decent noobs is frequently on the gossip channel giving away free eq to people lower level than himself.

Get a clue people. If kobolds is busy, go kill goblins. And if you have a problem with someone, deal with them politely, instead of talking a bunch of crap on gossip and paging the admin. How hard is it to tell player x, do you mind killing something else? I’m kinda small and kobolds are a good mob for me.

[img:7frlsso5]http://farm1.static.flickr.com/148/388345925_503cb1c158_o.jpg[/img:7frlsso5]

He’s killing [b:7frlsso5]MY[/b:7frlsso5] kobolds!

I just wish I could hit the little tackers

Quot: Looking at your stats Magi, you are not struggling to gather gold to level.

Grin… my stats are quite misleading :) During the first week I spent about 4 million coins on potions and scrolls, trying to level solo faster than godmode could sponge. Potion quaffing is a great way to get xp, but when you spend every coin you get on them, it makes your stats look rather misleading. I once levelled Ditheca at 500 million xp an hour (solo), but got zero gold doing so.

To tell the truth, I’m not suprised the ice troll or chubby eskimo were nerfed, in fact I mentioned it the first time we killed them around level 25. I was a quite surprised that dolphins were knocked down from 3500 to 2914 gold… unless that was a blanket depreciation for all level 40+ mobs, looking at a mob that only one person fights seems like a heavy burden of micromanaging. (hint: if you raise their poprate, i’ll stop cycling them! 70 corpsed and still no boots!)

I should also say that getting to know Splork through his alts has been quite fun. I have a large respect for him now that I could never have learned when he was just the ’evil nerfing overlord’ of Sloth III :)

My posts on this thread aren’t arguments, just observations.

The gold changes were a blanket percentage taken from level 40 and above mobs. I was actually thinking I would get them before anyone noticed but apparently a couple of you guys are hitting those mobs. Chubby and others were not targeted at all. We have some mobs that are coins mobs and always will be, I do like having a tradition here.

I have changed it up slightly on the next reboot. Sometimes the mobs will give more coins than normal and others they will give less, as they do now.

Im not going to yank anyone’s chain here, the overall affect is the same as it is now, less gold on high level mobs. This was needed. However, adding a little bit of randomness, excitement, and suspense to looting a mob is enjoyable, I think.

Thanks for the kind words, I do enjoy playing. I want to play more. Its just incredibly hard with a kid and knowing we still have some changes I have to get finished.

Enjoy,

Splork

Are vaults coming back in the future?

Though lonewolf’s actions were poor (swearing, picking on ppl, making fun of them) before splork called him on his behavior, yes a day later he attempted to apologise. Unfortunately I was unable to log on that day. Thing is, he was not the problem and the situation was not exactly what our dear Juggleblood has led everyone to believe.

The initial situation was not, as it has been said, level double 20plus (20x20x10 usually) laying waste to newbie areas though this was bad form. The problem was them killing morted mobs that took 2plus minutes to beat down to mortally wounded. That was what frustrated me and opened discussion. Then Splork spoke, everyone started into it, and the can of worms was opened.

I love how Jon lies. It makes everyone almost believe him, which is so unbecoming of an immort. Thing is, the situation was about bullying, botting, and greed. Splork recognized it and the insinuations flew. By the way, the time of the incident(s), only one person apologised, though the stealing of kills happened more than that one time apologised for because when high lev chars go through and one hit everything, they tend to not notice the newbie that’s been working on the mob the past few. They tend to not notice the impact a few of these lost kills take on a newbie who nearly dies trying to hit the pathetic mob they so quickly defeat.

When I enter an area, I always type where to make sure I’m not encroaching. These folks made fun of the hapless newbie they stole the kill from for not being fast enough. Since when is protecting newbies reserved for couples who are married? What if that newbie was someone reviewing the mud? Someone new? Does it matter to you?

Or are we all going to just make up what we want to because someone got tired of you being so two-faced and kicked you off her facebook friends list? You are supposed to be representing the mud, so next time let’s be honest. And though Lonewolf was a pr!ck, the truth be told it was the frustrating situation that upset me and the fact there was nothing to be done about it. Poor Lonewolf did apologise after being called on it. Is that the same as really being sorry? I guess.

It’s not a big deal, is it? You lie to make someone look bad. . . not knowing the whole situation? I think it’s worse than the kill theft.

Thank you for apologising for real, Defi. I appreciated that you notice newbies now. It’s sad that ppl took this to the nth degree. Sorry for anyone who felt trod on by getting called on the crap. I did quit playing my newbie and will get on to help Storms once in a while while he’s gone. He’s bad about studying his spellbooks! He’ll probably have one of the kids play Medik for a while - he hopes to make a raiser. That was my goal. I wanted to help folks. Too bad my exp gaining was so slow.

When you all talk about grouping, let’s think for a minute that maybe groups are hard for some ppl. So Newbie areas are essential. You can’t get enough gold to level just killing cats, dogs, and rats. I’m too little for goblins. . . But I know. . .I know I’m too slow. Good luck to you all.

And for gosh sakes, Jon Stop LYING.

Oh and again, it was XEROX not poor, misunderstood Lonewolf. Get it right, Jon. Oh wait, you’d have to have actually been there observing not making up from heresay.

Lonewolf did take it very personally when I got upset about losing yet another morted kill, this time to Xerox (who was a butt about it) and Stormshadow told Splork that the situation needed looked into. LONEWOLF started fighting about it and justifying his own behavior when Splork started talking about the situation on gossip. He was feeling guilty.

After I logged off, who knows what in all happened, but this was about high levs killing mortally wounded mobs and mobs I was in the middle of fighting because they were farming kobolds so fast they weren’t looking, or they were and did not care who they screwed over in the process.

Yeah lonewolf handing down eq is generous. I’m sorry he couldn’t apologize to me yesterday after his ranting but I was really not up for it. Sorry again for causing the uproar. It was not my intention. I was just frustrated and Stormshadow is overprotective.

If Splork sees the problem, then it’s a problem. If he sees no problem, then it’s not a problem. He is the head honcho here. I want to let all immorts know that I really appreciate what you’ve done. Sloth has been part of my life since the end of 1. It’s come a long way since then. WOW. Good luck to you all.

And again, let’s not lie. A nosy immort should know all the facts before posting they know what’s going on.

The situation has been resolved and I really dont see it being an issue anymore.

Its very important that we all try to get along, especially with all the changes and the restart. This includes me, yesterday was the first day in a very long time that the old splork returned and I got frustrated.

Enjoy,

Splork

BTW, I briefly installed and had a play with phpBB 3.0, and it’s really awesome, particularly the admin controls. Apparently with a little work Sloth’s current PNphpBB2 board can be imported by changing a few DB table names and a few tweaks.. just thought I’d suggest it being worth a look for use in a revamped future website. Also maybe CM software might be worth a look, even Wordpress might work well for the website. MovableType is really good.. a little bloated, but lots of features. Not sure how to handle the eq list in a practical way though.. MovableType has customefields, that might work.. just thinking out loud here while procrastinating.. I have an exam on Monday. bah.

I hope nobody gets mad about “farming” the fortune hunter on vk. He never loads and I don’t see how anyone will finish the aq with such a long list of people waiting for Acme to get done camping. After 30 kills I would say he is quite tired of it. I thought vk was a place to learn, not to cycle one mob for weeks.

I don’t know if it is just me but it seems like hardcore players get nerfed and players who only know one area get sheltered and helped. It is understandable that we need new players but I don’t understand why the hardcore players seem to be getting hit in the ass at every turn. From eq to coin nerfs it just seems like there is a thumb on our heads.

+1 to sharp sticks.

well, i musta noticed the situation very late, because i’m not trying to lie for anyone. I don’t really have any reason to. I don’t doubt the gist of the story you just posted. So I’m sorry I made judgement on incomplete facts.

I do find it kinda hard to believe that Lonewolf was intentionally trying to be a prick. But I can’t say i know for certain.

The gossips I was reading seemed pretty ridiculous to me on their face: people fighting over kobolds.

I don’t want you to be paranoid and think I have something against you. You cut bridges a while ago with anyone who grouped with John cuz you were fighting with him. It’s not as tho you or I have slighted each other or have any reason not to get along.

My impression was that people were being silly, but I guess you had a genuine grievance. Sorry. Peace.

Lone doesn’t = John does it? Then I’ll feel really stupid…

You’d have thought someone would try to sing out if even loads there nemore.

Well since his autoquest says that he has the shovel it would only seem like he still had it. If the item was moved maybe look at what the fortune hunter says when you talk to him. It is pretty clear that he has the shovel by his words. Shrug.

Anyone talking up wealth and glory hasn’t used it.

What are the key-names for shovel because I only know one and the song takes 2…

Just to prove what I am saying.

You ask the fortune hunter about ‘quests’.

The fortune hunter tells you ‘I long for a shovel that would help me find the treasures…’

ask hunter about shovel

You ask the fortune hunter about ‘shovel’.

The fortune hunter tells you ‘[b:5vhs9ph3]Do you see it? Do you see this worthless, useless shovel that[/b:5vhs9ph3]’

The fortune hunter tells you ‘[b:5vhs9ph3]I have to use to dig the earth?[/b:5vhs9ph3] I am perfectly sure that if I had a shovel imbued with’

The fortune hunter tells you ‘magic, I could find my dear treasure. Oh, if only you could convince a talented mage’

The fortune hunter tells you ’to enchant my shovel, I would be so grateful! Unfortunately, all I have is drachma and’

The fortune hunter tells you ’the mage is lusting for gold, which I don’t have… Please, help me!'

undertake shovel

The fortune hunter tells you ‘You don’t need to sign up, just do it!’

sing ‘wealth’ shovel

You begin to sing ‘wealth and glory’.

You deftly clap your castanets.

Ok.

It’s too boring to sing about such a vaguely described thing; give more detail!

I’m pretty sure the shovel isn’t enchanted until you take it to mage but I tried it anyways.

sing ‘wealth’ enchanted-shovel

You begin to sing ‘wealth and glory’.

You deftly clap your castanets.

Ok.

You start to sing of shovels and kings, of enchanteds and other things.

The fortune hunter listens intently.

The fortune hunter says ‘I’ve never heard of anything like that.’

It’s sturdy-shovel if I remember correctly.

my bad again…I’ll change the message.

Also I thought I’d heard that wealth and glory had changed, but I guess not.
