All hail King DeGrance II

·6051 words·29 mins

IN THE BEGINNING….

For centuries, the lands were embroiled in bitter struggles over the Seed of Njor. As King Arivan of the empirical city of Kara’sa held the relic, so did the legendary capital of Jord prosper for centuries under the mage-king’s rule. However, other kings in rebel kingdoms longed for the power of the Seed and joined forces in what has become known as the loose union of the Order of the Black Rose. Led by the powerful general of the Kingdom of Sardauker , General Oth, the Order of the Black Rose’s army laid waste to much of Kara’sa’s empire.

The War of the Black Rose went on for generations, causing the loss of many lives on both sides. The war continued for so long that for some, a life of bloodshed was all that was known until the young Prince Degrance I was elevated to the ruler ship of the rebel kingdoms. A wise man much beyond his years, King Degrance I sought out the ancestors of those known as the Celestials to seek their guidance in bringing peace to the world. The Celestials were saddened in their discovery of the world’s condition. Almost torn asunder, the entire planet lay in waste from the War that had drug on for centuries. The Celestial Council decided to set in motion the Cleansing.

THE CLEANSING

According to mortal historians, the Cleansing is referred to as the Cataclysm. The Cleansing was planned as a guise to trick mortals into destroying the world as punishment for their petty bickering. In doing this, they enlisted the efforts of greedy mortals to collect pieces of a timeless relic that promised them power and superiority. Upon completion of the Armageddon Clock, the world was torn asunder.

It was during this period that the Celestials came down from their godly realm and struck down the vile ruler Arivan of Kara’sa. His misuse of the Seed of Njor’s power disgusted the Celestials, and as such, they cursed the city of Kara’sa to be inhabited til the end of eternity with their undead spirits.

Seeing the true concern for the planet in DeGrance I, the Celestials left the city of Bal Harbor untouched after the Cleansing. As a result, the survivors flocked to Bal Harbor as a safe refuge from the horrible beasts that now inhabited the world.

During the reign of DeGrance I, the city of Bal Harbor maintained a peaceful trade with its neighboring nations. Prosperous times they were with port city of Bal Harbor a central point in the world where all travelers visited frequently. However, DeGrance I soon grew old and became ill with an unknown illness that struck him down suddenly and confined him to his terminal deathbed, leaving his only male heir DeGrance II to take over as King of Bal Harbor……………………….

TO BE CONTINUED…………….. in the coming weeks

Akasha

Ok, I’m interested.

I love any background to the game, very nice.

So King DeGrance I is ill? I say get a shortsword, chop off his head, and raise him. :)

It’s funny to have sick people in a world where even the smallest heroes can remove curses, diseases, and poisons then can heal or regeneration. If he’s a good king, lets set up a volunteer corps to continually cast ‘chronos incantation’ to keep him young and fit.

Still, it’s great to tie together different areas within a larger storyline. This looks interesting.

This issue was already addressed in OOTS. (It’s like the Simpsons of D&D.)

This has to be the saddest turnout of replies regarding possible quest theories, feedback, etc that I’ve ever seen on a thread.

Am i busting my ass for nothing?

;)

Akasha

[quote:3odkn1yh]Order of the Black Rose[/quote:3odkn1yh]

that sounds interesting…

<Chaos>

Awesome that you’re working on enhancing background and I’d be glad to see anything new in the mix. As far as the disease thing goes…to avatar: there are diseases like leprosy that can’t be cured and must heal on their own in game…thus he could be diseased with something of the like but uncurable, etc…so anyway, thanks akasha for the contributions. Sad that people have to criticize when an imm tries to integrate something new and give us a bit of variety in our mudding. I look forward to the continuation.

This sounds big.. I’ve noticed strangers wondering around, and not just in BH either.. methinks spies are about and forces are gathering, and I get the feeling DeGrance II ain’t a chip off the ole’ block either.. oedipus complex perhaps? Time will tell.. bring it on Akasha!

:)

Little is also known about Degrance’s bastard twin sons. While many an oaf would step forward upon the King’s demise to attempt deceit and claim a piece of the pie, only Billy and Little Titus Degrance (as they are known in small circles) could only reallyhold such a strong claim to the thrown should

something foul befall Degrance II. Now how the two twins came to hate each other is a tale in itself. One being as strong as an oxe and smart to boot, one would think he would be the ‘good’ one. Not so I tell ye, the other weakling and somewhat cowardly has a heart of gold but he is apt to throw a tempermental fit that keeps most locals away. Not for fear ot being attacked directly but in fear of being poisoned. And he be the good one. Madness I tell ya…

Sweet, I’ll need to prepare properly for this thing. Uni - deferred. Job - quit. Wife - divorce. Backup keyboard for when I wear the keys off this one - acquired.

Sounds like a good one.

Probably multiple parts, maybe a scavenger hunt for those old parts of the doomsday device. Maybe we could post the sightings of the new stuff, so we are somewhat prepared.

I’m thinking failure to succeed could bring on a new cleansing. Muhahaha!

Savvy

[quote:1n58dvse]I’m thinking failure to succeed could bring on a new cleansing. Muhahaha! [/quote:1n58dvse]

Don’t say that, people will try to sabotage in favor of said cleansing!

Like who?

so umm.. the kingdom’s on holiday?

Akasha, where for art thou?

The BH town girl is missing.. have you eloped? Are you both being held in a dungeon somewhere by an evil king?

first, the gypsy girl quest chain in BH has been removed for good… A new AQ will take its place in the next couple of weeks.

That said..

The time draws near for the first installment of the Epic Starter Package.

Some rumors have been spreading, and there has been some gossip along the grapevine about epic mobs. I’d like to take a moment to clear up what is going to be happening over the next 2 weeks leading up to a minor quest and finally the incorporation of a new system on sloth that will provide you with an open-ended, story-driven system through which to progress beyond your current class system.

The Epic Army System (as I call it) is an idea that was born from the Celestial Quest I ran over the summer. I also discussed the idea on gossip a couple of months ago to feel out interest.

Basically this system is a RANK BASED system through which you will be able gain ranks (which I will not disclose at this point) by gaining Honor.

Honor will be gained through a number of different methods.

1- through newly designed autoquests, refered to as Honorquests (HQs).

2- by killing Epic Mobs, which are mobs that are of an increased difficulty level beyound almost anything currently in the game. These epic mobs will be of the same level of difficulty as mobs you would normally find during an immortal ran quest. These mobs however will be permanently ingame (in various ways).

3- A new system called an Event System. Events are mini-quest occurrences that will take place based on specific requirements, and will be mud generated (without any immortal intervention). The events will play out in a predetermined time period, after which time they will end. As of this starter package, you will not be required to partake in Events when they happen. Later, once the story evolves, Events may become difficult to avoid. The mobs in these Events have predetermined goals and seek to achieve those goals through whatever means neccessary.

This system is designed to allow for growth and evolution based on you (the players) actions and desire. There is a main plot through which all stories will run, but the actual stories involved within that plot are written as you progress through the storyline. The story itself though, has no real ending.

This system is also designed to make it easier for enterprising immortals to be able to run quests at any time with mobs that are already designed to be quest-level mobs that exist in a plot line already.

Some of the questions I have fielded about this system already are:

Is it soloable?

ANSWER: Not really. There may be some instances where the system can be soloed (legitmately). But the system overall is geared to be a grouping system.

What will happen to old autoquests and drachma system?

ANSWER: Nothing. This epic system has been fully incorporated into the current autoquest and drachma system. Drachma quests however have become easy and plentiful. Drachma quests are also 1 and out setups, meaning most are not replayable. The Epic System is “mostly” repeatable, but as with autoquests, Honorquests will not be repeatable due to the nature of the quests. And NO, old autoquests will not give you Honor.

The starter package will include:

An array of mobs from which the stories will evolve and grow with more to be added later.

A sampling of honorquests and events, also more to be added later.

The entire system will open up a new array of concepts for you to explore and learn, all based within the currently existing world of Sloth.

This is all I’ll say for now, but the time is growing nearer. I plan on installing the starter package on November 4th, in mid-afternoon. No definite times have been scheduled yet.

Keep tuned here for more information over the next couple of weeks.

AKasha

Trust me, Im all about the Pats/Colts game too…. The main part will be over before the game starts, I plan on watching it too.

Aka

(So that you can quote and make comments/ask questions, I’ve copied the post to this thread).

Ok, 1 week countdown and counting.

November 4th at approximately 10am server time. (type “time start” online for those who don’t know). +/- 1/2 hour, I’m not a morning person.

This will be a quest to introduce to you the epic system we’ve been working on. A few notes:

The quest itself will be short, so the actual quest will be over with I’d say within an hour or two.

From the end of the actual immortal ran quest, the epic system will be installed and the story will continue from that point.

EPIC SYSTEM (a few notes from me)

As I mentioned before I will be introducing to you a couple of new concepts - Events and Honorquests. I’ll take a moment to go over these here so you know what to look for.

EVENTS—

As aforementioned, Events will be mini quests generated by the mud. As of now (with everyone low ranked) these events are voluntary, with no penalties for not participating. As you gain in rank however, and complete objectives along the way, some events will come to you, whether you want them to or not. Mobs will seek revenge, you will be asked to do things for mobs, etc. As per some discussions about afkedness, you will be safe from these events if you are afk in a SAFEROOM or in a VAULT. Out in the open you are fair game.

HONORQUESTS—

In its simplest form this are autoquests. BUT, some will be far more complex and complicated than regular autoquests. Anyone who has EVER done one of my autoquests knows that I sometimes go off on tangents from the main quest and have little subquests to prevent bottlenecks and boredom. These will be no different. My advice to ALL of you who don’t do it already:

1: Keep a log of who said what and what they said to do.

2: Dont assume 1 step and its over, or even 3 steps and its over -READ the questers comments.

3: Think in a logical progression if all else fails. I’m a logical person, and sometimes I will leave things out (accidentally, or on purpose) believing that logical progression will carry you forward. This applies to notetaking. If mob X tells you to go do something then come back, and 10 steps later you finally get a chance to do it, then logically, you would go back to mob X and see what happens (w/o someone needing to tell you “oh, now you can go back to X and tell him you did it).

4: Honorquests will be hidden in many things, to be found in a variety of ways. Not all will be go ask X about this-that. But everything can be found in something that is ingame and ready to go (not on Google).

This system is as much for me as it is for you. As a builder, I LOVE testing you with tricks, traps, and puzzles. I will be building things in this system to do just that. The mobs wont all be HIT HARD with LOTS OF HP. I know that gets boring. These mobs will require strategy, thinking, in some cases planning, and in some cases even a bit of luck. But most of all they will probably require that you actually be in control of your character. Some are designed to be a terror to botters.

Lastly, I have an open-door policy on everything dealing with this system. For those of you who have said, “this would be cool”, well, let me know it. I have lots of ideas and lots of reference material, but even I hit dry spells where ideas just wont flow. So if you have ideas for original mobs, or autoquests relating to something you read or did in the storyline, feel free to email me at Akasha(at)slothmud(dot)org. SUBJECT: EPIC

I keep a record of all ideas ppl tell me, and even tho you might not see it the next day or even the next week, rest assured its mulling over in my head till I can figure a way to make it work.

I have tested everything in this system as thoroughly as I can with keeping as much as possible secret. But I’m sure there will be bugs I missed. If you find something broken, or not working as it should the best thing to do is get me online, or email me and let me know so I can fix it. If there is a bug, it will probably work more against you than for you (its just the way I script things).

My plan for this system is to make bi-weekly to monthly additions in the form of expansion packs. The system that will be installed on Sunday is the Starter Package. A sampling of concepts and ideas I’ve been playing with. This package may or may not take you long to complete, but its mostly for me to see interest and desire. I will post in this thread everytime there is an expansion pack to be added and a summary of what it is (aka: new quests, new mobs, new events, bug fixes, etc).

Now really lastly, but deffinately not least. Special thanks to Kjartan and Isabo for their coding insights and abilities. Destiny for his work on a couple of areas. Krom for his insights on specific issues (not relevant to mortals ) And the entire staff of Creators for giving me the leeway to do this in the first place.

Hope you enjoy,

Akasha

I hope Day Light Savings isn’t going to mess up ppl’s clocks!

Yeah, I forgot about that when I set the date and time….

Remember to fall back an hour Saturday night, because the quest will be starting around 10am server time (COUNTING daylight savings time). But don’t be surprised (or disappointed) if it doesnt start until a little later. I know many ppl have already told me they’d be there, so I’ll look and make a judgement call to see if Daylight savings time might have screwed ppl up and go from there.

Aka

Great job. Love the story line and no your not busting your ass for nothing. Can’t wait till this gets going. Rockin !!

Page 8-6. Seed of Njor

Following The Cleansing, the Seed of Njor vanished from the mortal realm.

Many heroes have sought the ancient artifact, but none have stumbled upon

its where-abouts. Recently reports have been flooding that King Luicus

Dergance II may have actually stumbled upon documents written by Fathmori

that suggest that the Seed was split into two pieces after The Cleansing.

The Creators attempted to destroy the cursed relic during The Cleansing,

but ther combined power was not enough to undo the magic of Pron and

WoWiWe. In an effort to ensure that the Seed would never be found, they

split the artifact into its two distinct parts. One part cursed by Pron,

the other blessed by WoWiWe, both parts possessing attributes from one

another, neither entirely good nor evil. The Creators knew that although

they could not completely destroy the Seed, only as a single, joined

object would itbe of any use to the mortals who so strongly sought after

it. In the process of splitting it, the Creators summoned two creatures

to act as guardians that Pron and WoWiWe had created to protect the Seed

in just such an event.

Being of liquid form and favoring nature and the elements, WoWiWe created

a protector for the Blessed Seed Pod that would reflect the beauty of the

image he had envisioned for the mortals of Jord. A guardian whose sole

command was to wisk the Seed Pod away to a place of peace where the mortal

guardians of nature could oversee to its security. There the Seed Pod

has rested in the safety of the guardian’s clutches for decades.

Pron, however, was a raging fury, savage and furious with mortals, and

thus created a guardian for the Cursed Seed Pod that would reflect the

twisted nightmares that mortal-kind has created from WoWiWe’s beautiful

nature. The guardian was commanded to thieve away with the Cursed Pod

and secure it in a place of ancient horrors. Horrors so terrifying that

not even the greedy spirits of mortals would dare venture into to recover

it. There the Cursed Pod has rested, deep in the slime-ridden lair

of the twisted guardian.

A Mighty journey has begun, King Lucius Degrance appeared in Bah Harbor requesting assistance, a mighty following of adventurers has turned out seeking the new Kings attention.

A cryptic message was given in which the group was to find and secure two seed pods. After decoding the message, The first of the two guardians was found with the Green Spawn of the abyss, in the Valley of the Old Great Ones. There the Cursed Seed Pod. was found. Upon death a mighty surge darkened the wntire world for a few moments.

When each of the adventurers came to, they found themselves spread all over the known world. After regrouping, the searching for the second seed pod began. Bazilus, the fearless warrior, found a clue that the second pod was located somewhere in Settlestone. As the group gathered, the hunt began. Ultimately the second pod was found in Murkwood. A beautiful water naga which noone had ever encountered was in the area. From the Naga we retrieved the Blessed Seed Pod.

Returning to Bal Harbor the group was greeted by the King,

King Lucius DeGrance II says ‘you have found the Seed of Njor pods?’

King Lucius DeGrance II says ‘I will have my sages combine these pieces and Bal Harbor will once again rule!’

HONORQUEST

The epic system is a non-class oriented system whereby you are able to gain RANK

through the gaining of HONOR POINTS. Rank entitles you the INSIGNIA of that rank which has stats that will aid you on your journeys. The system includes quest-level

mobs that give honor on death. These mobs have conditional spawning requirements that include what House the stars are in, whether you have completed a particular autoquest, (termed HONORQUESTS) and in some cases pure randomness.

At low ranks, you will be required to perform many explorations, scouting missions, and other grudge work for your commander. You will also be expected to protect the kingdom of your sire, King Lucius Degrance. For your first few ranks, your goal is to serve and protect King Degrance and Bal Harbor.

At mid-level ranks, your goal increases to protecting the world of Jord from a growing evil. You will expected to perform dangerous missions of heroic proportions, to protect

the innocent and those unable to protect themselves.

Finally, at high-end levels you… well… you’ll have to find out yourself.

Along with rank insignia, ranks open up access to equipment not otherwise available through the use of the drachma system and secret shops only accessible by those of mid to high-level ranks.

Also included in the Epic System is a newly fashioned Library in Bal Harbor that allows access to a Tome which describes the events of the world as they occur, both past, present, and how the two tie in together. In the Tome you will find lists of EPIC MOBS that you can fight for honor points, you will also find notes on legendary relics that may be either a plot line for an autoquest or possible forges that you can acquire. You will use this Tome often in deciphering autoquest hints and find clues as to how to complete missions.

HONORQUEST

Epic mobs are creatures throughout the world of Jord that when killed will provide you with Honor needed to receive promotions. Most of these mobs you can find in the Tome of Fathmori Legends in the Library in Bal Harbor.

These mobs spawn based on a number of conditions such as Houses (see reading), completed honorquests, and in some cases, randomness. Sub classes of EPIC MOBS are

Raid mobs – small mobs that perform raids on cities, villages and other inhabited settlements across Jord.

Event mobs – any size mob that performs a mini-quest plot line and then disappears.

HONORQUEST

Enlisting in the epic army should not be performed lightly. Enlisting opens access to Honorquests and other events to you that would not be normally available. This also brings with it the responsibility of protecting the innocent and disadvantaged as you are now a hero of the land.

To enlist, visit Master Devry in Bal Harbor any time. You may want to ask him about joining_army to get more specific information.

HONORQUEST

When resigning from the epic army, you forfeit all accumulated Honor, but not your rank. You may REENLIST at any time to return to your previous rank, with 0 Honor. Why would anyone want to resign? At higher levels you may find yourself caught up in stories that will follow you regardless of whether you want to participate or not. You will be safe in rooms known to be SAFEROOMS and VAULTS, but elsewhere you will be fai game to the epic story line.

To resign, visit your local recruiter and type RESIGN. Be sure that this is what you want to do before you do it. Once the honor is gone, it will not return.

HONORQUEST

Honorquests are a step up from autoquests. Honorquests are more complicated, more complex, and usually more involved than autoquests. Honorquests will also reward you with Honor points towards your next rank. For your first set of honorquest/missions visit General Mathor north of Bal Harbor after enlisting. There you will find his work table with various available missions.

Although honorquests are similar to autoquests in their function, you will find honorquest clues hidden in various epic items and not always be given all the clues you need to complete your task. In some cases you will be required to piece together clues from material unrelated to each other.

For more information about honorquest setup, see AUTOQUESTS

This is awesome mate. Great work. can’t wait to see where it goes

blah it’s not lame :p

its very awesome to see that element brought to the mud, good coding effort…I personally can’t wait to join a RAID! ;}

Constructive Criticism

I’m very impressed by the changes going in, however, I would hope that groups refrain from cycling the same 3-4 mobs over and over in order to gain honor and the random drachma spillage from said kill.. maybe longer resets between kills which might be hard due to zone reset and/or maybe said MOB’s only loading/chance of loading in a certain house. The raid parties are fun and no concerns there. The fact that those ’epicish-type MOB’s’ seem to change their attacks and adapt new procs are also nice. Akasha is staying on stop of things. Again, a very good job.

First, Thanks appreciate the interest.

Second, this is a starter package. Some things have been accelerated for testing, pattern searches, and stat-gathering for balance issues. As I see how things are progressing, spawn rates, etc, I am fine tuning it. This system uses a lot of options the mud has had for years, but hardly anyone took advantage of, so its a fact gathering mission for me. I am guessing this test phase will last most of this week and the first expansion will be added around Thanksgiving. By that time I should have gotten the timing of things in order and under control.

Thanks again,

Akasha
